Revolutionary Social Transformation focuses on the visions and analysis culled from the writings of Karl Marx, Paulo Freire, and Antonio Gramsci. Marx's theory of critical praxis and his dialectical conceptualization of capitalism are discussed together with Freire's and Gramsci's ideas. The author suggests that these are necessary ingredients for authentic social transformation as well as a basis for rekindling hope for a veritable democratic future. The author employs both a language of critique and a language of possibility to argue that the process of social transformation must be inherently educational. Social transformation begins in prefigurative, preparatory projects and continues ev...

In today’s vernacular, Marx ‘outed’ capitalism well over a century ago; however, his explanation has been both ignored and misinterpreted by not only his detractors but also by many socialists and even a considerable number of Marxists as well. Today we are experiencing the full impact and suffering the repercussions of capitalism’s inherent need to grow and become, more than ever before, a fully internationalized and integrated system of socioeconomic control and domination—the global system that many commentators have suddenly remembered Marx and Engels (1848) presciently forecasted in the Communist Manifesto.

Inside the Teaching Machine

Inside the Teaching Machine argues that the U.S. public research university has always been a vital component of the capitalist political economy. Advocates of higher education have long contended that universities should operate above the crude material negotiations of economics and politics. Such arguments often ignore the historical reality that the American university system emerged through, and in service to, a capitalist political economy.

First published in 1984, this collection of essays was the first account of the development of the University of the Third Age in Britain (U3A). Changing employment patterns and increasing pressure on traditional areas of secondary and higher education has led to the idea that learning can be a life-long process. The theories of U3As in Britain, their development under the influence of European models, and the major influences on them are analysed. The authors argue that the consequences of social change and the economic, social, political, sexual and racial inequalities that exist are often reinforced by the inequalities in our educational system. A comprehensive title, this book will be useful to any students with an interest in adult and continuing education.

Red Pedagogy

This ground-breaking text explores the intersection between dominant modes of critical educational theory and the socio-political landscape of American Indian education. Grande asserts that, with few exceptions, the matters of Indigenous people and Indian education have been either largely ignored or indiscriminately absorbed within critical theories of education. Furthermore, American Indian scholars and educators have largely resisted engagement with critical educational theory, tending to concentrate instead on the production of historical monographs, ethnographic studies, tribally-centered curricula, and site-based research. Such a focus stems from the fact that most American Indian scholars feel compelled to address the socio-economic urgencies of their own communities, against which engagement in abstract theory appears to be a luxury of the academic elite. While the author acknowledges the dire need for practical-community based research, she maintains that the global encroachment on Indigenous lands, resources, cultures and communities points to the equally urgent need to develop transcendent theories of decolonization and to build broad-based coalitions.
