The Hidden Consumer

  • Categories: Art

This book covers various aspects of the social history of politics on both sides of the Iron Curtain in the period 1945 to 1956. The contributors come from a range of countries (Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and the United Kingdom) and comprise a mixture of established historians and younger scholars engaged in pioneering research. The individual chapters are organised into four sections dealing with workers, ethnic and linguistic minorities, youth, and women. In order to enhance the comparative character of the volume, the four chapters contained in each section consider the position of these social groups in, respectively, West Germany, East Germany, Austria, and either Czechoslovakia or Hungary. Major themes include the absence of popular revolutions in the aftermath of World War Two, the re-imposition of social control by post-war elites, the attempt to restore pre-war gender relations, and the failure of Communist parties to win popular support. The chosen time-frame saw most of the decisive developments which set the pattern for the remaining Cold War period and is therefore of key importance for any student of this topic.

Embracing the richness, complexity and possibilities of learning and teaching in design, Design Education takes the vantage point of the 'outsider' and explores what makes design so compulsively fascinating for those who teach and study it. Through more than 40 projects, from design students' use of archives and museum collections to the potential of specific technologies to enhance teaching and learning, from architecture and 3D design to fashion, Philippa Lyon explores aspects of learning and teaching in higher education design subjects. Taking an ethnographic approach and using data from interviews, discussions and observations, the book also examines issues such as the experience of desi...

The climate of Higher Education is changing rapidly. The students are more likely to see themselves as consumers and have increasingly high expectations regarding teaching and learning. Universities are in part aiming to meet this need by increasing the use of technology; for example, whether to increase access to teaching materials outside the classroom or to make lectures more interactive. Although there is no illusion amongst Higher Education intuitions that technology is a panacea, it is clear that technology is a vital tool in meeting expectations and one that will be used more and more. Consequently the context of this book is one in which technology needs to be understood as part of a...

Women Artists and the Parisian Avant-garde

A re-presentation of women artists whose works were widely exhibited and regularly featured in the French art press and in modern art surveys from 1900 to the 1920s, but who largely disappeared from public view after World War II. The analysis of their work unravels the cultural, aesthetic, and economic reasons for their absence, particularly the issue of "feminine" and "masculine" categories in art. The artists featured include: Emilie Charmy, Jacqueline Marval, Maria Blanchard, Alice Halicka, Marevna, Alice Bailly, Marie Vassiliev, Suzanne Roger, and Mela Muter. The text includes fine color reproductions, bibliographic appendices, and an excerpt from Marevna's writings. Distributed by St. Martin's Press. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
