Care-Based Methodologies

Care-Based Methodologies reimagines relationships between researchers and youth participants in school-based research. The book calls attention to care-based methodologies as essential to qualitative and ethnographic research in schools, particularly when participants are youth from nondominant communities. While researchers come to schools seeking to understand youths' lived experiences and become implicated in the quotidian rhythms of their lives, it is rare that they receive training on how to navigate the complex interpersonal dynamics and relationships that take shape during long-term school research. How can researchers ensure that they care for the wellbeing of youth, not just the sto...

Brothers in Grief

A heartbreaking account of grief, Black boyhood, and how we can support young people as they navigate loss. JahSun, a dependable, much-loved senior at Boys’ Prep was just hitting his stride in the fall of 2017. He had finally earned a starting position on the varsity football team and was already weighing two college acceptances. Then, over Thanksgiving, tragedy struck. An altercation at his older sister’s home escalated into violence, killing the unarmed teenager in a hail of bullets. JahSun’s untimely death overwhelmed his entire community, sending his family, friends, and school into seemingly insurmountable grief. Worse yet, that spring two additional Boys’ Prep students would be...

Cases of Teachers’ Data Use addresses applications of student data beyond theoretical, school-, and district-level examinations by presenting case studies of teachers’ data use in practice. Within the context of data-driven education reform policies, the authors examine the effective and ineffective ways that teachers make use of student data in instruction, evaluation, and planning. Promising practices, based on the empirical research presented, offer strategies and routines for sound data use that can be applied in schools. Chapters written by scholars from diverse methodological perspectives offer readers multiple lenses to use in considering issues of data use such that current theoretical assumptions may be challenged and the field advanced. This uniquely focused yet comprehensive work is an indispensable resource for researchers and students interested in classroom assessment and for professionals looking to support teachers’ use of student performance data for adaptive instruction.

Data and Teaching

Drawing on their research in nine of New York City’s most poverty?impacted schools, the authors dive deep into school systems and routines, as well as into teachers’ practices and students’ experiences. They also zoom out to capture the larger currents that have made this school reform strategy so prominent today. Each chapter includes a discussion of a new direction that schools and teachers can take to ensure that data use in teaching actually spurs growth in learning. This resource extracts lessons from both chaotic and productive data implementation in order to inform practice and fulfill hopes for better schooling, richer teaching, and deeper learning. “A detailed and fascinatin...

I also find that although school, cultural, and disciplinary practices may be well intentioned, these practices may inadvertently reproduce the very structures that they attempt to circumvent by unintentionally reinforcing entrenched stereotypes about black boys. I further find that boys' understandings of masculinity are not fully reflected in school practices, nor are they legible expressions of masculinity to school staff. The contributions of this dissertation enrich the conversation with prior theory about how organizational or school practices can affect change with students, what helps black boys learn best, and how black boys can possess masculinity that is as varied as it is complex. Lastly, my work extends and elaborates upon current theoretical understandings of the development of adolescent masculinity.

Potential advances in sensing can be made by conjugated polymers includes poly(p-phenylene), poly(p-phenylene vinylene), polyfluorene, and poly(thiophene). Among the most important classes of polymers are heterocyclic polymers, such as polyimides, because polyimide nanocomposites possess exceptional mechanical strength as well as chemical, mechanical and temperature resistance. Polyimide offers the potential of providing efficient sensors through its ability to work actively. There is evidence that fluorescent polyimide is efficient at detecting hazardous pollutants. Chemical modifications of the polyimide backbone gave rise to an improved luminescence efficiency of polyimide by incorporatin...
