The ruins of an Anglo-Norman fortress built over an Early Christian Irish dún, it was fought over, occupied, fortified, reinforced, seized, abandoned, and blown up. Today, silhouetted against the Laois skyline, the stark grandeur of the ruined fastness of Dunamase has the power still to stir our imaginations. Plundered by Viking raiders in 843AD, it became the dowry of Aoife, the bartered daughter of Diarmait Mac Murchada, when she married Richard De Clare, Strongbow, as the price for the Anglo-Norman invader restoring Diarmait as king of Leinster. Fortified by a murder hole, arrow slits, portcullis, drawbridge and high protecting walls, the struggles between Gaelic Irish versus invading forces played out around the fortress of Dunamase for centuries. Weapons and armor, buckles and spurs, gaming pieces and arrowheads, Gaelic metalwork and medieval coins, all unearthed in excavations, bear witness to its role as a focal point for critical events in Irish history.

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Brú na Bóinne in the Boyne Valley is home to Ireland's finest passage tomb complexes of Knowth, Dowth and Newgrange. Knowth in particular was the focus of many years of work by the late Professor George Eogan, whose excavations have provided significant contributions to understandings of this monument and landscape through the millennia, and of wider prehistoric Ireland. Inspired by Professor Eogan's legacy, the National Monuments Service 5th annual archaeology conference examined the Boyne Valley monuments in the context of the wider prehistoric world. Boyne and beyond: essays in appreciation of George Eogan presents a selection of the papers from this conference, exploring the story of Knowth through time, megalithic art in the Boyne Valley and beyond, the Dowth Hall passage tomb, and Ireland in the wider prehistoric world, amongst other important aspects.

Trade through the port of Dublin has driven the prosperity of the city for a thousand years. In tracking the history of Dublin Port, Ian Elliot splices the story of its development with the age-long search for accurate ways of measuring time that would allow seafarers to navigate safely across oceans. As ancient water clocks evolved into atomic clocks, Dublin Port was transformed too. He delves into time, clocks and navigation, the Dunsink Observatory and its astronomy, atomic time and the global positioning system, and much more. In this richly illustrated book, Elliot tells the story of Dublin port's visionary public servants and engineers, and of the pioneering astronomers and stargazers whose life work molded a perilous medieval landfall into a modern, living port.
