Guardian angels often appear most when they are least expected, but more often when and where they are needed most. They remind us that life is good and there are people who care. It was with those sentiments in mind that non-profit Wings for Injured Athletes, Inc. was started and spread its wings in 2011 with the creation of a Cancer, One Day at a Time inspirational book. All of us could use a little motivation at some point in our lives and cancer patients, survivors and caregivers are extremely ingenious when it comes to positive thinking. This Cancer, One Day at a Time keepsake book includes insightful, thought provoking and stimulating quotes from cancer survivors, patients and caregive...

If being smart isn’t enough to guarantee success, then what is? Being pretty smart is the key – that is, having passion, commitment, resilience and a firm belief that you can achieve your dreams. So who has been smart and “pretty"? In the pages of Pretty Smart you will find the insights, wisdom and stories from twenty-two former Miss Americas, who are not just pretty but pretty smart, and how they pursued their passions all the way to professional and personal success. With their thoughtful intelligence and insightful eloquence these women shatter the myth that the Pageant is “just a beauty contest.” Their stories, woven into a tapestry of inspiration and wisdom, prove that it takes vision, discipline, drive and, yes, brains to win the crown.

A fresh exploration of American feminist history told through the lens of the beauty pageant world. Many predicted that pageants would disappear by the 21st century. Yet they are thriving. America’s most enduring contest, Miss America, celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2020. Why do they persist? In Here She Is, Hilary Levey Friedman reveals the surprising ways pageants have been an empowering feminist tradition. She traces the role of pageants in many of the feminist movement’s signature achievements, including bringing women into the public sphere, helping them become leaders in business and politics, providing increased educational opportunities, and giving them a voice in the age of...

Transforming Identities

Addict rehabilitation is best thought of as a process of transforming identities - that is, of making reprobate street characters that society labels «drunks, » «pill freaks, » «junkies, » and the like into decent members of respectable society. This process, as carried on in a therapeutic community of the early 70's called Eagleville Hospital, is described in this book from the perspective of an anthropological participant-observer who lived for a time with a women's therapy group. What she saw was a world in which both staff and patients reside within a radically restructured social and cultural ambience. In this «brave new world» most contexts of daily life are affected, particularly with respect to their ideological content and relations of power. It is, therefore, these aspects of Eagleville's reality-system that the analysis is focused upon. The goal is to unpack the elements of the identity-transformation process.
