No Regrets in the Evening of Life
The type of local and school history before the reader may be unfamiliar. It is a definitive and scholarly history in the style of many grammar school histories in Queensland. Although it is not unknown for Australian public and private schooling, it is unique for Queensland state schools. By saying it is a ‘definitive and scholarly history’, what is meant is not that the history is complete; only that it reaches decisive conclusions in a substantive treatment. In this particular case, the historian is someone who has been trained at the level of a higher degree.

T.J. Ryan
It is timely that this new edition should be published in the historic first year of the Labor government of Wayne Goss, a leader who has already invited comparisons with T. J. Ryan. T. J. Ryan was a natural leader. In 1915 he was elected Labor Premier of Queensland against the turbulent background of World War I. His Labor government set the foundations for Labor rule in Queensland which lasted until the 1957 split. Denis Murphy's fascinating biography concentrates on Ryan the politician, a consummate tactician and leader of great ability whose untimely death in the early 1920s robbed him of the chance to lead the nation. The Third International Conference on Isotopes focused on the theme of ?Isotope Production and Applications in the 21st Century? and included presentations by several eminent experts in this field. The three central subjects ? Isotopes in Medicine, Industry and the Environment ? were supplemented by presentations on the latest developments in isotope production and synthesis, research into radiopharmaceuticals, applications in agriculture, analytical applications, radiocarbon dating, AMS and PET. Most members of the Stolen Generations had white fathers or grandfathers. Who were these white men? This book analyses the stories of white fathers, men who were positioned as key players in the plans to assimilate Aboriginal people by 'breeding out the colour'. The plan to 'breed out the colour' ascribed enormous power to white sperm and white paternity; to 'elevate', 'uplift' and disperse Aboriginality in whiteness, to blank out, to aid cultural forgetting. The policy was a cruel failure, not least because it conflated skin colour with culture and assumed that Aboriginal women and their children would acquiesce to produce 'future whites'. It also assumed that white men would comply as ready appendages, administering 'whiteness' through marriage or white sperm. This book attempts to put textual flesh on the bodies of these white fathers, and in doing so, builds on and complicates the view of white fathers in this history, and the histories of whiteness to which they are biopolitically related.

With an open heart and inquiring intellect, Raymond Evans sets out to uncover a past not studied in the school books of his youth. Growing up in the 1950s, he lived in a community devoid of Aboriginal presence. It was an enclave of Welsh migrant families, with all the rituals and traditions of a faraway "Home". His evolving historical consciousness was fired by the need to connect with these shadowy absences and to engage with his adopted homeland. Interwoven with his personal journey is a revealing selection of race relations histories, which cover a wide arena from the Aboriginal/European conflicts of colonial Queensland to the anti-Chinese riots of 1888 and civilian internment during World War I. Evans also moves beyond frontier conflict into the long period of repressive government control of Aboriginal lives. In writing on race, gender and labour relations he illustrates how selective history can be by omitting the contribution of Aboriginal labourers, men and women. These form a critical bridge to understanding the complexities of race relations today.
