Unnatural States is a radical critique of international theory, in particular, of the assumption of state agency—that states act in the world in their own right. Peter Lomas argues that since the universal states system is inequitable and rigid, and not all states are democracies anyway, this assumption is unreal, and to adopt it means reinforcing an unjust status quo. Looking at the concepts of state, nation, and agency, Lomas sees populations struggling to find an agreed model of the state, owing to inherited material differences; and unsurprisingly, among theorists of the nation, only controversy and a great confusion of terms. Meanwhile, the functional incarnations of the state agent a...

The Rise of Rome

By the third century BC, the once-modest settlement of Rome had conquered most of Italy and was poised to build an empire throughout the Mediterranean basin. What transformed a humble city into the preeminent power of the region? In The Rise of Rome, the historian and archaeologist Kathryn Lomas reconstructs the diplomatic ploys, political stratagems, and cultural exchanges whereby Rome established itself as a dominant player in a region already brimming with competitors. The Latin world, she argues, was not so much subjugated by Rome as unified by it. This new type of society that emerged from Rome’s conquest and unification of Italy would serve as a political model for centuries to come....

Manipulative Monkeys

With their tonsured heads, white faces, and striking cowls, the monkeys might vaguely resemble the Capuchin monks for whom they were named. How they act is something else entirely. They climb onto each other’s shoulders four deep to frighten enemies. They test friendship by sticking their fingers up one another’s noses. They often nurse—but sometimes kill—each other’s offspring. They use sex as a means of communicating. And they negotiate a remarkably intricate network of alliances, simian politics, and social intrigue. Not monkish, perhaps, but as we see in this downright ethnographic account of the capuchins of Lomas Barbudal, their world is as complex, ritualistic, and structure...

Polar Stroke

David Aston was a good accountant and into his thirties. He knew that professionally he had done well but his physical acts were virtually non-existent. He was a literal eight stone weakling. He decided to something about it, but he didn't know what. After a lot of time looking at the various options he decided he would train up and walk to the Magnetic North Pole. Despite the incredible obstacles he faced he managed to defy the odds and walked there. A few years later he was driving his car when he had a car crash and his world turned around in a second. He was in hospital with a relatively minor jaw injury when all of a sudden he had a stroke and he had become physically and mentally impaired. He could no longer work as an accountant. He now knew that he had to defy the odds again and start to combat the stroke. He remembered his North Pole trip and took heart from this and a few of the tricks he learnt from the North Pole he started using them again but in a more serious battle against a stroke. This book tells of his fights, firstly in doing the impossible and walking to the North Pole, but secondly in fighting one of natures worst diseases.
