Der Erzähler der Geschichten holt eine Krippe aus ihrem Jahresschlaf. Zu manchen Figürchen fällt ihm eine Geschichte ein, zwischendurch auch anderes, in dem nicht Kripppenguren, sondern Masken und Spielzeug, auch eine Tracht eine Rolle spielen, wenig belangreiche Dinge hierzulande, aber bedeutugsschwer dort, wo sie zu Hause sind. Erzählt wird von Kindern, alten Männern und jungen Leuten in verschiedenen Gegenden vor allem Lateinamerikas. Krippenfuguren erhalten wohl erst jetzt eine Geschichte. Masken haben immer schon eine, Spielzeug und Tracht sowieso. Die Geschichten sind in älteren und jüngeren Perioden angesiedelt. Der Leser wird ihnen selbst der richtigen Zeit zuordnen.

Wenige Regionen der Erde haben im letzten halben Jahrhundert so grauenvolle Massenmorde und Zerstörungen gekannt wie die Länder in der Mitte Afrikas, unter anderem auch Rwanda, Burundi und die benachbarte Kivuprovinz des Kongo. Der Verfasser hat den Anfang dieser Zeit miterlebt, und über Jahre hinweg wurde ihm immer deutlicher, wie tief diese tragische Entwicklung ihre Wurzeln zwar nicht ausschließlich, aber doch in vielen Bereichen in den Vorstellungen und Strukturen hat, die Kolonisation, Mission und zuletzt die Entwicklungshilfe diesen Ländern aufgezwungen haben, darunter manches, was bei uns in der Öffentlichkeit nach wie vor eher einen positiven Stellenwert hat. Einige dieser "weißen Schatten auf schwarzem Land" werden hier vorgestellt, so, wie sie sich uns im Lauf der sechziger Jahre nach und nach erschlossen haben.

The purpose of Numerical Linear Algebra in Signals, Systems and Control is to present an interdisciplinary book, blending linear and numerical linear algebra with three major areas of electrical engineering: Signal and Image Processing, and Control Systems and Circuit Theory. Numerical Linear Algebra in Signals, Systems and Control will contain articles, both the state-of-the-art surveys and technical papers, on theory, computations, and applications addressing significant new developments in these areas. The goal of the volume is to provide authoritative and accessible accounts of the fast-paced developments in computational mathematics, scientific computing, and computational engineering methods, applications, and algorithms. The state-of-the-art surveys will benefit, in particular, beginning researchers, graduate students, and those contemplating to start a new direction of research in these areas. A more general goal is to foster effective communications and exchange of information between various scientific and engineering communities with mutual interests in concepts, computations, and workable, reliable practices.
An Invitation to Quantum Groups and Duality
This book provides an introduction to the theory of quantum groups with emphasis on their duality and on the setting of operator algebras. Part I of the text presents the basic theory of Hopf algebras, Van Daele's duality theory of algebraic quantum groups, and Woronowicz's compact quantum groups, staying in a purely algebraic setting. Part II focuses on quantum groups in the setting of operator algebras. Woronowicz's compact quantum groups are treated in the setting of $C^*$-algebras, and the fundamental multiplicative unitaries of Baaj and Skandalis are studied in detail. An outline of Kustermans' and Vaes' comprehensive theory of locally compact quantum groups completes this part. Part III leads to selected topics, such as coactions, Baaj-Skandalis-duality, and approaches to quantum groupoids in the setting of operator algebras. The book is addressed to graduate students and non-experts from other fields. Only basic knowledge of (multi-) linear algebra is required for the first part, while the second and third part assume some familiarity with Hilbert spaces, $C^*$-algebras, and von Neumann algebras.
