Fairness and Division of Labor in Market Societies
Contrary to the explanations offered by the theory of non-reflexive, path-dependent institutionalism, the U.S. and the German automotive industries undertook strikingly similar patterns of industry modification under tough international competition during the 1990s, departing from their traditional national patterns. By investigating the processes of the U.S. and German adjustments, the author critically reconsiders the prevalent paradigms of political economy and comes to the conclusion that the evidence does not confirm the neoliberal paradigm. In order to better account for the recomposition of new market relations, which the author terms "converging but non-liberal" and "diverging but not predetermined" markets, he proposes an alternative model of "politics among reflexive agents," emphasizing different kinds of problem-solving practices among those reflexive agents. He argues that different forms and regimes of market are established in the process of recomposition, in which agents reflect upon not only market rationality but also upon their own institutions, creating new norms.

Poverty Trends in Germany and Great Britain
Jan Brülle shows how poverty risks in Germany between 1992 and 2012 increased concentrated on those with low educational levels, in lower occupational positions, and with precarious employment careers, as the country’s welfare state failed to adapt to widening inequalities in households’ market incomes. Contrasting the German experience with Great Britain, where social transfers to low-income families in concert with favourable labour market conditions helped to reduce poverty between 1992 and the global financial crisis, he presents the most comprehensive comparative study on poverty trends in these two countries to date. Moving beyond a cross-sectional perspective on poverty, the author analyses why it became not only more frequent in Germany, but also more persistent in individual life-courses, and why faster exits have driven the decline in poverty in Great Britain.

Comparing external promotion of anti-corruption norms and provisions in civil administration, public finance management and public procurement in Turkey this book identifies the domestic conditions under which external actors can affect real-world outcomes. Providing a comprehensive, empirical account of Turkey’s fight against corruption, the book’s cross-sectoral analysis explores the power relations between major political actors and bureaucratic state elites, and examines how structural administrative factors filter external pressure for anti-corruption reforms and determine the prospects for institutional change in the Turkish public sector. Techniques for Asking Sensitive Questions in Labour Market Surveys
Um Antwortverzerrungen bei der Erhebung von sozial unerwünschtem Verhalten in Arbeitsmarktsurveys zu reduzieren, können spezielle Befragungstechniken eingesetzt werden. Die Arbeit untersucht die Wirksamkeit dieser alternativen Fragetechniken - wie Randomized Response Technique (RRT) und Item Count Technique (ICT) - zur Erhebung des Ausmaßes von Schwarzarbeit und Arbeitslosengeld-II-Bezug in Deutschland. Außerdem wird eine neue Methode zur Erhebung von quantitativen heiklen Merkmalen entwickelt und angewendet: die Item Sum Technique (IST). Die Befunde zeigen, dass die häufig angenommene Wirkung der RRT oder der ICT auf die Bereitschaft der Befragten, sozial unerwünschtes Verhalten zu berichten, nicht eindeutig ausfällt. Die Ergebnisse der IST fallen hingegen positiver aus.
