Philip Studer is the eldest of four siblings. His younger brother SSG Brian E. Studer, a soldier for nine years in the US Army, was killed August 22nd, 2008 in Ghazni, Afghanistan. He was attempting to disarm an Improvised Explosive Device in a roadside culvert. As the lead on this particular mission and as an expert Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) technician, it was his job to remove these devices for the safety of fellow soldiers and civilians in the area. Brian, 28, was only months away from finishing his deployment to Afghanistan and less than four months from leaving the military to explore new directions. Philip survives his brother and lives in the Twin Cities of Minnesota where he practices commercial interior design. This book is the result of the authors' courage and focus at the Veterans Book Workshop, where we work to make manageable and material personal archives of images, words and memories from the current wars."--colophon.

In this sequel to The Magic Slippers... By a strange quirk of fate, Stu had found a job that he enjoyed and was good at. He was a Planning Surveyor responsible for drawing up programmes, material scheduling and measuring the bonus. He was the Site Manager's right hand man and even ran sites himself when the need arose. Stu was in a construction unit called Unit Two: a great bunch of lads, always up for a laugh, especially with their Tea Lady, Mavis. She ended up subjected to exploding cigarettes and purple tea. Jack Wild was the Construction Manager. He ended up the victim of exploding caps under his blotter and taped to the wheels of his chair. The biggest challenge for Stu was the job at the Film, Photography and Television Museum in Bradford. Stu ran it himself and it tested him to the limit.

My wife, Diane, died on 3rd November 2022. We had been married 45 years. Her passing tipped me into a breakdown. I went to Moss Park (mental health) Hospital as a voluntary patient, but they sent me to Scarborough, where I was sectioned. They should not have done that. It allowed them to keep me locked up for 6 months, which they did. During that time, I was prevented from organising or even attending my own wife's funeral. But, later, I escaped and went to Switzerland to search for my Swiss family. I didn't find them but my escape ultimately led to my release from hospital.

It has always struck me as odd to have a police unit called The Serious Crime Squad. All crime is serious by definition. I know what they mean by 'Serious Crime: murder, rape, bank robbery, for example. 'Serious' is defined as: 1. Demanding or characterised by careful consideration or application. 2. Acting or speaking sincerely and in earnest, rather than in a joking or half-hearted manner. You could apply that definition to investigating any crime. So, I have flipped it on its head - the opposite of serious is 'frivolous'. 'Frivolous' is defined as: Not having any serious purpose or value. I have invented crimes that the Serious Crime Squad would not touch: 1. Stealing collection money from a church. 2. Wheelie bin fire. 3. Theft of five pairs of very expensive knickers. It follows therefore, that these crimes are frivolous; hence the name of the book!

People involved in architecture need to be familiar with construction methods in order to be in control of their designs. New technical requirements impact on our buildings and call for up-to-date specialist knowledge, which leads to new forms of architecture. This handbook uses clearly comprehensible 3D isometric diagrams to introduce the world of contemporary construction, from concept through to the detail; photographs are used to illustrate the content. The three main chapters deal with the structure, the building envelope, and the fit-out, starting with a clear introduction to the construction principles of modern building methods. Using drawings of selected built examples at scales of 1:10 and 1:20, a deeper examination of details is possible.
