Pierre de Ravenne, ou Saint Pierre Chrysologue, est né vers 380 à Imola en Italie. Il fut théologien et conseiller du Pape Léon 1er. Il devint évêque de Ravenne, cité impériale de 433 à sa mort. Avant tout pasteur, il a beaucoup prêché, et son éloquence lui valut le surnom de Chrysologue, qui veut dire « aux paroles d'or ». Il fut déclaré docteur de l'Église par le pape Benoît XIII en 1729.St Pierre Chrysologue a écrit plusieurs sermons sur différents sujets, principalement sur des paraboles et des événements de la vie du Christ. Nous y retrouvons entre autres des sermons doctrinaux dirigés contre les ariens, nestoriens et les eutychiens ; des sermons consacrés à l'explication du symbole et des sermons qui commentent l'oraison dominicale, visant à achever la préparation baptismale des catéchumènes.Cette collection de sermons constituée au VIIIème siècle a été conservée et est présentée dans cette oeuvre grâce à une traduction française originale.
