Women in Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Prevention

We are delighted to present the inaugural Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine "Women in Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Prevention” series of article collections. At present, less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women. Long-standing biases and gender stereotypes are discouraging girls and women away from science-related fields, and STEM research in particular. Science and gender equality are, however, essential to ensure sustainable development as highlighted by UNESCO. In order to change traditional mindsets, gender equality must be promoted, stereotypes defeated, and girls and women should be encouraged to pursue STEM careers. Therefore, Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine is proud to offer this platform to promote the work of women scientists, across all fields of basic and clinical cardiovascular medicine. The work presented here highlights the diversity of research performed across the entire breadth of cardiovascular epidemiology and prevention research and presents advances in theory, experiment, and methodology with applications to compelling problems.

Inflammation and Chronic Disease

One of the most important medical discoveries of the past several decades has been that inflammatory processes are involved in not just a few select disorders, but a wide variety of mental and physical health problems. Inflammation is directly linked to morbidity and mortality. Some estimates suggest that inflammation plays a key role in ischemic heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and autoimmune and neurodegenerative conditions. Understanding the role of inflammation has helped us better understand many chronic diseases, their progression and potential prevention. For example, substantial advances in basic and experimental science have illuminated the role of inflammation and the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms that contribute to atherogenesis and atherosclerosis. On a more clinical level, population-based studies have demonstrated that baseline C-Reactive Protein (CRP) levels predict future cardiovascular events.

Atrial Fibrillation: Selection of Management Strategy and Evaluation of Outcomes

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an increasing arrhythmia disease; its pathophysiology is the subject of many studies. Rate and rhythm control along with stroke prophylaxis are the cornerstones of AF therapy. With the recent evolution of techniques, AF ablation is becoming the first therapeutic option in many centres worldwide. Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) for paroxysmal AF is now well established. Additional methods are now rising with non-PV trigger ablation: such as drivers, posterior wall isolation, epicardial ablation... Recognition of physiopathological signature for AF is the next challenge for all rythmologists. This will be achieved only by collecting different inputs such as imagery a...
