The second International Conference on Applied Cryptography and Network Security (ACNS 2004) was sponsored and organized by ICISA (the International Communications and Information Security Association). It was held in Yellow Mountain, China, June 8–11, 2004. The conference proceedings, representing papers from the academic track, are published in this volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) of Springer-Verlag. The area of research that ACNS covers has been gaining importance in recent years due to the development of the Internet, which, in turn, implies global exposure of computing resources. Many ?elds of research were covered by the program of this track, presented in this...

Drug Discovery for Schizophrenia

Drug Discovery for Schizophrenia

Since the pioneering pharmacotherapy for treatment of schizophrenia in the 1950s by antipsychotics, only a few major innovations have been made, pointing to a general stagnation in the field of pharmacology of schizophrenia. Drug Discovery for Schizophrenia covers new insights in the field of schizophrenia with an aim to advance the understanding of scientists and clinicians in this area and to fuel drug discovery. The book outlines a change in the way schizophrenia is treated by moving away from focusing only on treating symptoms in patients. Innovative drugs emerge from deeper comprehension of the pathological processes that emerge earlier in life, hence, providing strategies for preventative therapy to alter the course of this mental disorder. Amongst other current topics, the book covers new findings in genetics and epigenetics, progress in animal models for schizophrenia and the usage of induced pluripotent stem cells. The combination of these important areas benefit psychiatric neuroscience, filling the gaps in the knowledge of neurobiology of schizophrenia and providing novel perspectives for future drug development.

This past decade has led to many significant advances in the understanding of the function of excitatory amino acids in synaptic transmission. The cloning of the ionotropic and metabotropic glutamate receptor families of receptor proteins has produced new strategies for the pharmacological modulation of glutamate transmission. The engineering of transgenic animals with modified expression of receptor proteins has created new insights into the function, dysfunction and possible pathology causally related to glutamate receptors. Advances in the pharmacology of glutamate receptors has led to clinical research addressing multiple therapeutic applications of drugs that act on excitatory amino acid systems. A number of NMDA receptor anatagonists have now been studied in humans. AMPA/kainate and metabotropic receptor active compounds have left the preclinical realms of research and have moved towards or are in the clinic.

Companion to Clinical Neurology

This book is designed for the neurologist who (in this day of unusually strict accountability) needs to have at hand an authoritative guide to the diagnostic criteria for all conditions that he or she may be faced with in clinical practice. While originally conceived as a compendium of diagnostic criteria, the author has felt the need to expand the work to include definitions of practically all terms that are used in neurology today. Historical elements are also provided--including entries of important neurologists and neurosurgeons who have impacted the field. The result is an effective representation of the tools of the trade for the neurologist in training and a concise and precise source...

Addiction Reviews 2, Volume 1187

This volume features expert, refereed reviews of timely topics in each of the areas relevant to addiction science and clinical practice to aid researchers and practitioners interested in addictions. Authors from the United States, EU, Asia and elsewhere provide an international perspective on the problems and practices. Specifically, this volume: - focuses on topics that are relevant to specific substances but also provides important lessons for addiction to all substances - provides reviews that are aimed to be useful to specialists in the field and as useful to students as the first criterion allows. This is a new edition of the successful textbook providing updated, detailed information on clinical, epidemiologic, pathophysiologic and therapeutic aspects of common and rare forms of vasculitis. New chapters include pathology of vasculitis, autoantibodies, animal models of vasculitis and PET scanning. Separate sections are devoted to basic science, clinical manifestations commonly seen in vasculitis, imaging and perpcutaneous interventions, individual diseases and syndromes as well as conditions which can mimic vasculitis. Subsumed under clinical manifestations are chapters, some new, which deal with skin, oral ulcers, eyes, cardiopulmonary system, nervous system, the gastrointestinal track, kidney and digital ischemia and Raynaud's phenomenon. Other chapters address diagnostic approaches to adults and to children with suspected vasculitis, as well as assessment of disease activity and damage. Individual chapters are written by authorities from throughout the world.

CNS Neurotransmitters and Neuromodulators is an indispensable and comprehensive reference for any research worker involved with glutamate in the CNS. An impressive group of well-known authors contribute up-to-date reviews that offer a global picture of the state of research in the area. The authors cover a wide range of interdisciplinary aspects of the subject, including anatomical, physiological, and biochemical. Topics in this volume range from the localization of synthetic enzymes through electrophysiology, pharmacology, and molecular biology to behavioral importance in learning and memory. No other single volume offers the depth or broad scope of material found here. In addition to being a definitive reference work, CNS Neurotransmitters and Neuromodulators is the perfect one-step introduction to glutamate in the CNS for undergraduates, postgraduates, or established researchers who want a comprehensive overview text to keep abreast of developments in several areas of neuroscience.
