'The Poor Clare' is a short story by English Victorian writer Elizabeth Gaskell. The story is narrated by an unnamed young lawyer from London, reflecting on the "extraordinary incidents" which he experienced in his youth. The story proper begins several decades before. Squire Starkey, a recusant Jacobite, returns to Starkey Manor with his Irish wife and their son Patrick. Accompanying them is their Irish Catholic servant, Madam Starkey's former nurse, Bridget FitzGerald and her daughter Mary, who take up a small cottage in the grounds of the manor. Bridget comes to exercise great control over the household. Some years later, due in part to an increasingly fractious relationship with her mother, Mary FitzGerald leaves Starkey Manor to take up a position on the Continent. Racked with grief at her daughter's departure, Bridget keeps to her cottage until Madam Starkey brings her a young spaniel, Mignon, who becomes her constant companion. She receives occasional letters from Mary, the last informing her that she was going to marry a gentleman.

Calm The Soul

'We will never achieve true happiness if we continue to search for it outside the very source of love, which we know is God himself.' In Calm the Soul: A Book of Simple Wisdom and Prayer, The Poor Clares, an enclosed order of nuns based in Nuns' Island, Galway, draw on the fruit of their monastic lives and suggest simple practices to help nourish our souls and find a sense of calm in today's world. With practical advice in preparing for prayer, The Poor Clares look at ways we can slowly build up the amount of time spent in prayer and meditation in our daily lives, to achieve a sense of peace and well-being. They combine reflections on familiar prayers, such as the Our Father and Hail Mary, with meditations on Scripture, and prayers for specific needs such as depression, self-esteem and sickness. An inspiring book of simple spirituality which offers faith and hope to anyone seeking solace in today's world.

Children of the Poor Clares

The original 1985 edition of Children of the Poor Clares was the first book to expose the reality of the treatment of children placed in church care in Irelands post-independence horrendous industrial school system. Giving an intimate picture, covering over four decades, of life in one of these institutions, it documented the gross physical and emotional abuse, neglect, malnourishment, exploitation, lack of proper education, deprivation, and humiliation that scarred the children for life. It further identified the collusion of the state and its own lawbreaking that enabled the abuse in its vast apparatus of incarceration of impoverished children. This revised updated edition gives chilling details of revelations that have since become public and of the states ultimate responsibility for what took place.
