Investigating, whether the visual design is an act of making objective, rational design decisions or is governed by an individual’s, choices, preferences likes, and dislikes? Rationalizing design decisions to formulate a new grammar to understand visual design.
The booklet is a short narrative about the HfG Ulm. The Ulm School of Design (Hochschule für Gestaltung, HfG), founded in 1953 by Inge Scholl, Otl Aicher and Max Bill. It was the most influential design school of the 20th century. The booklet is a short narrative about the HFG Ulm. It is a conversation between a student and teacher. The student builds a stool which unfortunately, is an exact copy of the ‘Ulm stool’ by Max Bill. Unaware of its creator, the student thinks that it has created something that does not exist. Lack of exposure to design history and design products of the past reinforces the importance to teach history at design schools in INDIA.
Mumbai Rail Map is designed as a ‘you are here map as well as a portable print map. Maps are excellent in clarifying the mental model* of a novice commuter who is anxious about his travel. Once the mental model is clarified the use of a map reduces unless a new information need arises**. Therefore maps are products of infrequent use. Whenever a query arises, the map should provide the answer. If the map is not usable then people might prefer to ask someone. So the design of the map must be user-friendly and self-evident. Unless everybody (especially children) is taught to read maps at a national level, the anxiety towards map-reading and accessing information will persist. Our study found that with a little training (about search based on alphabetical order and grid), people’s ability to comprehend and use the MRM improved drastically.
This book addresses several aspects of environmental sustainability awareness and priorization, explores ways to use resources and processes more responsibly, and describes the strategies, models and tools required to overcome various challenges. Sustainable and green IT are used to minimize the current ICT recycling problems which are harming our planet. The book discusses the new green information technologies as alternatives to conventional ICT, which have significantly harmed nature, and examines how to make recent technologies such as cloud computing; social networking; smart technology; blockchains, IoT (internet-of-things); and big data sustainable. Exploring sustainability awareness and importance among individuals and organizations in the developed and developing countries, most of the contributions conclude that sustainability should be considered a duty in order to change mindsets, attitudes and actions so as to preserve our planet. Furthermore, it examines the green information technology strategies and models.
This book showcases over 100 cutting-edge research papers from the 4th International Conference on Research into Design (ICoRD’13) – the largest in India in this area – written by eminent researchers from over 20 countries, on the design process, methods and tools, for supporting global product development (GPD). The special features of the book are the variety of insights into the GPD process, and the host of methods and tools at the cutting edge of all major areas of design research for its support. The main benefit of this book for researchers in engineering design and GPD are access to the latest quality research in this area; for practitioners and educators, it is exposure to an empirically validated suite of methods and tools that can be taught and practiced.
This book showcases cutting-edge research papers from the 9th International Conference on Research into Design (ICoRD 2023) – the largest in India in this area – written by eminent researchers from across the world on design processes, technologies, methods and tools, and their impact on innovation, for supporting design for a connected world. The theme of ICoRD’23 has been ‘Design in the Era of Industry 4.0’. Industry 4.0 signifies the fourth industrial revolution. The first industrial revolution was driven by the introduction of mechanical power such as steam and water engines to replace human and animal labour. The second industrial revolution involved introduction of electrical...
