Marikana Unresolved: the massacre, culpability and consequences
The Marikana massacre of 16 August 2012, during which 34 miners on strike were shot and killed by police at the Lonmin Mine in South Africa’s North West province, remains a scar in the tissue of this newly democratic country. Several years after the massacre, and despite a lengthy commission of enquiry into the events around that date, there has still been no satisfactory political or legal accountability. Marikana Unresolved is a collection of chapters focused on the unsolved question of accountability for the massacre. It provides a cross-disciplinary account of what really happened, how the event has affected the current South African socio-political landscape and how it has changed public discourse on the mining sector, the labour market and national reconciliation. Written by highly regarded scholars and practitioners, it looks at the massacre from the perspectives of law, philosophy, media, politics, economics and public governance.
Decolonising Journalism Education in South Africa
This book is the culmination of several years of collaborative work. It is a unique contribution to the field of journalism because of the depth and variety of contributions it makes to the field. The scholars who contribute to this volume respond to the great need to rethink journalism from various perspectives including journalism training, research, the contents of the news media, language, media ethics, the safety of journalists and gender inequities in the news media. In doing this, they recognise how the societies that journalism address should themselves change.
Glass Ceilings
The third Glass Ceilings survey of South African media launched on 19 October - national press freedom day - 2018 shows there have been dramatic shifts in the race and gender composition of media since the first study twelve years ago. But black women are still not fairly represented in media decision-making; the pay gap is widening, especially in the age of digitisation; and the old boys’ network is alive and well. In the #MeToo and #TotalShutDown era, the conversation is moving beyond numbers, to the underlying patriarchal norms that fuel sexist attitudes, harassment and its newest ugly form – cyber misogyny. With the 25th anniversary of democracy fast approaching, the key message in the report is that #TimesUp for the South African media and #TimeisNow to walk the talk of gender equality!
The Palgrave Handbook of Media and Communication Research in Africa
This handbook attempts to fill the gap in empirical scholarship of media and communication research in Africa, from an Africanist perspective. The collection draws on expert knowledge of key media and communication scholars in Africa and the diaspora, offering a counter-narrative to existing Western and Eurocentric discourses of knowledge-production. As the decolonial turn takes centre stage across Africa, this collection further rethinks media and communication research in a post-colonial setting and provides empirical evidence as to why some of the methods conceptualised in Europe will not work in Africa. The result is a thorough appraisal of the current threats, challenges and opportunities facing the discipline on the continent.

Women Journalists in South Africa

The Limits of Transition: The South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission 20 Years on
The South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission was a noble attempt to begin to address the continuing traumatic legacy of Apartheid. This interdisciplinary collection critiques the work of the TRC 20 years since its establishment. Taking the paralysing political and social crises of the mid-1990s in South Africa as starting point, the book contains a collection of responses to the TRC that considers the notions of crisis, judgment and social justice. It asks whether the current political and social crises in South Africa are linked to the country’s post-apartheid transitional mechanisms, specifically, the TRC. The fact that the material conditions of the lives of many Apartheid victims have not improved, forms a major theme of the book. Collectively, the book considers the ‘unfinished business’ of the TRC.
