Democracy at Work in an Indian Industrial Cooperative
The authors tell the story of a democratic workers' cooperative that makes hand-rolled cigarettes, known as "beedis," in the unorganized sector of a fiercely competitive capitalist economy in India. For decades, beedi workers have been among the most exploited and impoverished of India's work force. In 1969, in the southwestern Indian state of Kerala, several thousand workers banded together to form a worker-owned beedi cooperative. The authors argue that their skill and determination, combined with Kerala's generally leftist political culture, allowed them to beat the odds. The cooperative surprised the private sector beedi barons by creating an enterprise that has lasted and prospered, offering the best wages and benefits in the business, while making a profit and contributing to the local economy.The authors analyze the major features of the cooperative, assessing its overall structure, worker-elected management, shop floor democracy, and progress in providing a better life for its worker-owners. Tensions are also discussed, including the complaints of women workers and the need for diversification from tobacco.
Female Infanticide, Its Causes and Solutions
Female Infanticide, a social problem is a multi dimensional phenomenon in Tamilnadu. This work is an attempt to study the problem historically and in a futuristic perspective. After analysing this social evil, a few suggestions are also made to solve this problem. A dozen case studies are presented by the author in order to identify the various dimensions of the problem. The author has tried to make theoretical framework as strong as possible in order to provide the right focus. As female infanticide has been rampant in the Usilampatti area of Tamilnadu, the area has been chosen for analysis. The study includes the analysis of the views of women on female infanticide before and after the introduction of the Adult Education Programme.

Indian Diaspora in the Caribbean
This volume seeks to explore some aspects of the history of Indian emigration to the Caribbean, which is one of the most significant events in the history of Indian indentured migration that took place to different parts of the world during the second half of the nineteenth century. The Indians faced many hardships in the Caribbean during the initial stage of their migration. However, over the years, they have become one of the most successful immigrant ethnic groups in the Caribbean. This book studies key facets of this retention of the Indian ethos.
