A Newly Discovered Greek Father
A critical edition an ancient manuscript, which has resulted in discovery of Cassian the Sabaite, whom Medieval forgery extinguished, by attributing heavily interpolated Latin translations of this Greek original to a figment called ‘John Cassian’. This erudite Sabaite intellectual is Pseudo-Caesarius and the author of Pseudo Didymus' De Trinitate.
Treasuries of Literature
The contributions included in this volume deal with the indirect tradition of classical Greek texts in anthologies, lexica and scholia. The innovative approach taken consists in considering the indirect sources as texts worth studying in their own right, rather than as repositories of older, more important texts. The indirect tradition in scholarly literature is thus considered in terms of its broader historical and cultural implications.
Singing Alexandria
This volume investigates the transmission and ancient reception of ancient Greek texts with musical notation. It provides a reconstruction of the dynamics of reception orienting the re-use and re-shaping of musical and poetic tradition in the entertainment culture of the post-classical Greek world. The study makes full use of literary, papyrological and epigraphic evidence, and in particular includes a detailed philological analysis of surviving musical papyri and of their relationship to the editorial activity of Alexandrian scholarship. The study helps to relocate musical documents in the world of their production and reception.
