Scientific Truths in the Qur'an

The miraculous nature of the Qur'an lies in the knowledge it contains and this is an everlasting, renewable and a living proof. The Qur'an was given to mankind more than fourteen centuries ago. Recent advancements in various sciences have revealed innumerable facts. None of these discoveries contradict a single verse of the Qur'an. In fact, each time the world makes a breakthrough in unraveling the universe, we increase in certainty that the One who created this universe is the One who revealed the Qur'an. It is filled with important facts which were revealed at a point in human history when no man could possibly have known them. The Qur'an speaks about the origins of the universe, workings ...

ISIS’s Ideological Project (Examining ISIS’s perception of religious texts through rhetorical discourse analysis)

This book deconstructs ISIS’s narrative in order to demonstrate how ISIS appropriates the past, interprets the present, and visualises the future for Arab Muslims. This project depends on the rhetorical analysis by taking all speeches written and delivered by Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, ISIS’s media spokesman from 2011 until 2016, as a case study. ISIS’s rhetoric shows that the group has been frozen in time and space; it relies on opposite dualities in managing the affairs of life, and puts the laws of God against the laws of man as a belief to establish the Caliphate. To do that, it borrows heavily but selectively from the Islāmic laws based on the teachings of the Qur’ān and Sunnah, ...

Islam, Charity, and Activism

Throughout the Middle East, Islamist charities and social welfare organizations play a major role in addressing the socioeconomic needs of Muslim societies, independently of the state. Through case studies of Islamic medical clinics in Egypt, the Islamic Center Charity Society in Jordan, and the Islah Women's Charitable Society in Yemen, Janine A. Clark examines the structure and dynamics of moderate Islamic institutions and their social and political impact. Questioning the widespread assumption that such organizations primarily serve the poorer classes, Clark argues that these organizations in fact are run by and for the middle class. Rather than the vertical recruitment or mobilization of the poor that they are often presumed to promote, Islamic social institutions play an important role in strengthening social networks that bind middle-class professionals, volunteers, and clients. Ties of solidarity that develop along these horizontal lines foster the development of new social networks and the diffusion of new ideas.
