This volume contains the presentations of the principal speakers at the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Porto Portese, Italy,23 August - 2 September, 1982. This meeting was the third in a series devoted to the molecular biology of plants. The initial meeting was held in Strasbourg, France in 1976 (J. Weil and L. Bogorad, organizers), and the second in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1979 (C. Leaver, organizer). As in these previous meetings, we have attempted to cover the major topics of plant molecular biology so as to promote the integration of information emerging at an accelerating rate from the various sub-disciplines of the field. In addition, we have introduced several topics, unique to higher plants, that have not yet been approached with the tools of molec ular biology, but that should present new and important aspects of plants amenable to study in terms of DNA -+ RNA -+ Protein. This meeting also served to inaugerate the new International Society for Plant Molecular Biology. The need for this society is, like the NATO meetings themselves, an indication of the growth, vitalitv and momentum of this field of research.
The conference on "RNA: Catalysis, Splicing, Evolution" brought together a unique assembly of scientific leaders in this currently very important field. Two participants of this Conference, Drs. T.R. Cech and S. Altman, were just awarded the 1989 Nobel prize in chemistry, which attests to the timeliness of this volume. The critical reviews authored by these two prominent scientists are included. For those scientists with roots in this field, who do not subscribe to GENE, this is an excellent opportunity to obtain a masterly collection of papers. All the original papers and reviews have undergone the rigorous peer review of the journal "Gene".
International Review of Cytology
First published in 1985, this book covers the physiological and environmental factors that regulate leaf growth. It opens with a consideration of the importance to the plant of leaf size, form and development, and then divides naturally into two sections: the first covers the intrinsic factors within the leaf that influence development, including solute and hormonal status, cellular components, and energy transducing systems; the second considers the role of some major environmental variables in the regulation of leaf growth, including temperature, light, water and nutrients, atmospheric influences and the interactive effects of climatic variables.
The 5th International Symposium on Microbial Growth on C Compounds was held at the Biological 1 Center of the University of Groningen, Haren, The Netherlands, 11-16 August 1986. The meeting attracted well over 200 participants from 15 countries. This volume contains the formal presentations made at that time, which, because of the breadth of topics covered, were divided into seven sections of related papers. This meeting, under the chairmanship of Wim Harder, was both scientifically and socially very successful. This success cannot only be credited to the main presentations, but also to the well cared for 121 poster presentations, whereof the abstracts have been published separately. The series of Symposia will be continued in 1989, in the Federal Republic of Germany. We wish to acknowledge the invaluable help of Joke Daniels, Roberta Stroer-Schneider, Karin Uyldert, Hansje Bartelson and Josine van Verseveld-Stroer, who retyped the manuscripts resulting in a uniform presentation of these proceedings.
These four volumes with close to one thousand contributions are the proceedings from the VIIIth International Congress on Photosynthesis, which was held in Stockholm, Sweden, on August 6- 11, 1989. The site for the Congress was the campus of the University of Stockholm. This in itself was an experiment, since the campus never before had been used for a conference of that size. On the whole, it was a very sucessful experiment. The outcome of a congress depends on many contributing factors, one major such factor being the scientific vigour of the participants, and I think it is safe to say that the pariticipants were vigourous indeed.
