Radiometry and the Detection of Optical Radiation

Presents a treatment of fundamental aspects of the generation, transfer and detection of optical and infra-red radiation. Emphasis placed on practical aspects of radiometry in detection. Discusses formal principles of radiometry, signal-to-noise considerations in the detection of optical radiation, and the operation of various radiation detectors. Includes tables and graphs of blackbody functions.

Byzantine Jewry in the Mediterranean Economy

Using primary sources, Joshua Holo uncovers the day-to-day workings of the Byzantine-Jewish economy in the middle Byzantine period. Built on a web of exchange systems both exclusive to the Jewish community and integrated in society at large, this economy forces a revision of Jewish history in the region. Paradoxically, the two distinct economic orientations, inward and outward, simultaneously advanced both the integration of the Jews into the larger Byzantine economy and their segregation as a self-contained body economic. Dr Holo finds that the Jews routinely leveraged their internal, even exclusive, systems of law and culture to break into - occasionally to dominate - Byzantine markets. In doing so, they challenge our concept of Diaspora life as a balance between the two competing impulses of integration and segregation. The success of this enterprise, furthermore, qualifies the prevailing claim of Jewish economic decline during the Commercial Revolution.

Modern Aspects of Bulk Crystal and Thin Film Preparation

In modern research and development, materials manufacturing crystal growth is known as a way to solve a wide range of technological tasks in the fabrication of materials with preset properties. This book allows a reader to gain insight into selected aspects of the field, including growth of bulk inorganic crystals, preparation of thin films, low-dimensional structures, crystallization of proteins, and other organic compounds.

While the standard solid state topics are covered, the basic ones often have more detailed derivations than is customary (with an empasis on crystalline solids). Several recent topics are introduced, as are some subjects normally included only in condensed matter physics. Lattice vibrations, electrons, interactions, and spin effects (mostly in magnetism) are discussed the most comprehensively. Many problems are included whose level is from "fill in the steps" to long and challenging, and the text is equipped with references and several comments about experiments with figures and tables.

Themata Politica

“This book is a collection of timely political articles and essays. They focus primarily on political themes relevant to Greek/Turkish relations, the Cyprus problem, the obstacles that Turkey faces in the EU, and the problems that the US war on terror has created for them all. Written by a person of Hellenic ancestry, a trained philosopher, sensitive poet, and free spirit, the items of this collection are characterized by frank talk, freedom of thought, fresh ideas, and historical insights that penetrate the past sharply, as they try to discern the future of humanity. In these essays, the author’s love for things Hellenic is surely exaggerated. But, if anything in human history deserves excessive eulogy and praise, it should be, without doubt, the Hellenic spirit and its passionate love of wisdom and freedom.”

New Developments in Ferromagnetism Research

Ferromagnetism is a form of magnetism that can be acquired in an external magnetic field and usually retained in its absence, so that ferromagnetic materials are used to make permanent magnets. A ferromagnetic material may therefore be said to have a high magnetic permeability and susceptibility (which depends upon temperature). Examples are iron, cobalt, nickel, and their alloys. Ultimately, ferromagnetism is caused by spinning electrons in the atoms of the material, which act as tiny weak magnets. They align parallel to each other within small regions of the material to form domains, or areas of stronger magnetism. In an unmagnetised material, the domains are aligned at random so there is ...
