Reading Across the Pacific
Reading Across the Pacific is a study of literary and cultural engagement between the United States and Australia from a contemporary interdisciplinary perspective. The book examines the relations of the two countries, shifting the emphasis from the broad cultural patterns that are often compared, to the specific networks, interactions, and crossings that have characterised Australian literature in the United States and American literature in Australia. In the 21st century, both American and Australian literatures are experiencing new challenges to the very different paradigms of literary history and criticism each inherited from the 20th century. In response to these challenges, scholars of both literatures are seizing the opportunity to reassess and reconfigure the conceptual geography of national literary spaces as they are reformed by vectors that evade or exceed them, including the transnational, the local and the global. The essays in Reading Across the Pacific are divided into five sections: 'National literatures and transnationalism', 'Poetry and poetics', 'Literature and popular culture', 'The Cold War', and 'Publishing history and transpacific print cultures'.

Drei nicht mehr ganz taufrische Damen treffen in der Metropole Bangkok aufeinander. Dagmar sucht ihren Mann, Hermine ihren Sohn und Ute einen neuen Job. So ungleich ihre Ziele, so verschieden ihre Charaktere und ihre Handlungsweisen auch sind, finden sie doch gemeinsam das, was sie gar nicht gesucht hatten: Eine freundschaftliche Koexistenz in einer exotischen Umgebung. Ein verliebter, jedoch ausgebrannter, Kommissar plagt sich mit einer grauenvoll entstellten Leiche ab. Sein Bemühen wird von seinem ehrgeizigen Assistenten durchkreuzt. Viel schlimmer aber hat es einen deutschen Urlauber erwischt, dessen fatale Fehlentscheidung sich als direkter Weg zur Hölle erweist. All diesem Leid setzt die kleptomane und niemals um eine Ausrede verlegene Hermine ihren urkomischen Stempel auf.
Politische Kultur- und Demokratieforschung
Dass Bücher so etwas wie eine Leidensgeschichte besitzen, mussten wir beim Verfassen des vorliegenden Bandes erfahren. Bereits Anfang 2003 wollten wir eigentlich „fertig sein“, doch immer neue Probleme und auch stetige Erwei- rungs-, Überarbeitungs- und Verbesserungsphasen verzögerten die Fertigstellung dieses Lehrbuches. Zum guten Abschluss ist es uns doch noch gelungen, alle Ereignisse zu überwinden, wertvolle Anregungen aufzunehmen und schmerzh- te Kürzungen durchzuführen. Doch erscheint es uns als Einführungsbuch jetzt auch stärker gestrafft und zielorientierter als die längere Version.
