The first monograph on more than thirty years’ work by the Indian-born British artist, whose opulent, brightly colored paintings have made him one of the most extraordinary and sought-after artists working today. Shaw’s work is as vibrant and ornate in color and detail as it is ambitious in scope, with a remarkable synergy between his fantastical and often violent imagery and the delicacy of his technique. Deeply inspired by the old masters but infused with his own personal iconography, and drawing equally on eastern and western mythology, his work represents a compelling and profoundly contemporary hybridization of aesthetics and sensibilities. His opulent and intricately detailed paint...
Bagi Nadra, jadi isteri Raqib tidaklah sesusah mana. Tak perlu dilayan macam putera raja. Makan disuap tidur didodoi pun tidak. Pendek kata, Raqib memang suami yang sempoi. Yang sukarnya bila jadi cucu menantu bekas Leftenan Kolonel Tuan Haji Yunus. Tak habis-habis mengungkit, kononnya, dia tak pandai buat air kopi. Badannya macam papan lapis dan muka pula pucat tak berdarah. Sabar sajalah...
Throughout the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, cinema has been adopted as a popular cultural institution in Bangladesh. At the same time, this has been the period for the articulation of modern nationhood and cultural identity of Bengali Muslims in Bangladesh. This book analyses the relationship between cinema and modernity in Bangladesh, providing a narrative of the uneven process that produced the idea of "Bangladesh cinema." This book investigates the roles of a non-Western "national" film industry in Asia in constructing nationhood and identity within colonial and postcolonial predicaments. Drawing on the idea of cinema as public sphere and the postcolonial notion of formatio...
This study of Andalusian strophic poetry and their "Kharjas" provides an updated survey of the debates on this topic. The texts are studies historically, prosodically, thematically and stylistically and they are related to other literary traditions of the Middle Ages.
Raqib Shaw?s opulent and brightly coloured paintings suggest a fantastical world full of intricate detail, rich colour, and jewel-like surfaces, all masking the intense violent, religious and sexual nature of its imagery. There is a sense of anxiety in the paintings, which are influenced by Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights. In this exhibition he also made a large-scale model of a giant lobster-type creature devouring a man with a bird-head.
- This breathtakingly intricate, beautiful book accompanies an exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh and extensive publicity surrounding it.
