Summary: The Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum in Cologne has, for more than 100 years, been one of Europe's leading ethnological museums. From the autumn of 2010 it will be presenting an innovative exhibition concept in new premises. The route through the exhibition will focus on themes rather than major geographical regions that convey multifarious insights into the ways of life of people in all parts of the world, showing various facets of cultural contact, the way the generations and the sexes live together, and how individuals use clothes and ornament to position themselves in society. Rituals involving masks are illustrated, while the objects on display also cast light on different religious world-views and ideas of God, as well as how death is dealt with and the role played by ancestors. High-calibre objects from the extensive collection are explained in generally comprehensible terms, and also shown in their original context through numerous in situ photographs. The exhibition makes a splendid plea for granting all cultures parity of esteem.
