Food Citizenship

The global food system is the largest segment of the world's economy. As agribusiness-studies pioneer Ray Goldberg suggests, it is also the largest health system on the planet. And it is changing fast. Its size and importance to human, environmental, and economic health means that no system is viewed with as much suspicion by so many people around the globe. Changing societal expectations and scientific and medical advances have made the drivers of the food system--the world's food citizens--realize they must take more responsibility for society's nutritional needs, economic development, and the health of the environment. Goldberg argues that the traditionally commodity-oriented, bargaining ...

Reprint of the 1957 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Agribusiness is the business of agricultural production which involves the production, protection, sales, and marketing of the product to satisfy the customers need. The term is a portmanteau of agriculture and business and was coined in 1957 by John Davis and Ray Goldberg. It includes agrichemicals, breeding, crop production (farming or contract farming), distribution, farm machinery, processing, and seed supply, as well as marketing and retail sales. All agents of the food and fiber value chain and those institutions that influence it are part of the agribusiness system. In their book A Concept of Agribusiness, Goldberg and Davis provided a rigorous economic framework for the field. They traced a complex value-added chain that begins with the farmer's purchase of seed and livestock and ends with a product fit for the consumer's table. It may rightfully be considered one of the foundation studies on the subject. Scarce in the original.

"[The Marina City towers are] the most convincing and impressive arguments against Mies...They stand out in this city like exclamation marks against the domination of the box, they alone challenge the neatly tied-up packages of space which almost exclusively determine Chicago's cityscape." -Heinrich Klotz, Architecture and Urbanism, 1975 --Book Jacket.

Hippocrates, Father of Medicine

First published in 1963, this book by University of Missouri Microbiology Professor Herbert S. Goldberg provides the reader with a picture of the life and times of Hippocrates, the “Father of Medicine.” Hippocrates was born on the island of Cos in 460 B.C., and his works remained for centuries the foundation of medical and biographical knowledge. In addition, it was Hippocrates daring approach to the problems of sickness and disease that drove the opening wedge into the wall of fear that surrounded human ills. Hippocrates scrupulous attention to professional ethics is honored even to this day by the medical oath that bears his name—The Hippocratic Oath. Goldberg accurately describes the professions and trades during Hippocrates time, as well as the early education of youth in ancient Greece. Medicines were not based on science, but on driving evil spirits from the body. Hippocrates scientific approach to the study and treatment of disease has deservedly earned for him the title of “Father of Medicine.”

Sittings

  • Categories: Art

This book is the culmination of an advertising campaign by the exclusive design company Vitra, which had the idea of photographing famous personalities sitting on Vitra chairs. The resulting photographs collected in Sittings are remarkable in their portrayal of word-famous personalities from the fine and performing arts, commenting on the link between style and status. Vitra hired the Swiss photographer Christian Coigny to shoot the campaign. What began as an attempt to amuse the public became a celebrated campaign that lasted for a decade. This book is a testament to Coigny's tact, insight, and creative skill, each photograph capturing a unique moment and revealing something new about its subject.

Soft X-Rays and Extreme Ultraviolet Radiation

This detailed, comprehensive book describes the fundamental properties of soft X-rays and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation and discusses their applications in a wide variety of fields, including EUV lithography for semiconductor chip manufacture and soft X-ray biomicroscopy. The author begins by presenting the relevant basic principles such as radiation and scattering, wave propagation, diffraction, and coherence. He then goes on to examine a broad range of phenomena and applications. The topics covered include spectromicroscopy, EUV astronomy, synchrotron radiation, and soft X-ray lasers. The author also provides a wealth of useful reference material such as electron binding energies, characteristic emission lines and photo-absorption cross-sections. The book will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers in engineering, physics, chemistry, and the life sciences. It will also appeal to practising engineers involved in semiconductor fabrication and materials science.
