Mixed Signals

In the shadow of the Cold War, whispers from the cosmos fueled an unlikely alliance between the US and USSR. The search for extraterrestrial intelligence (or SETI) emerged as a foundational field of radio astronomy characterized by an unusual level of international collaboration—but SETI’s use of signals intelligence technology also served military and governmental purposes. In this captivating new history of the collaboration between American and Soviet radio astronomers as they sought to detect evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations, historian Rebecca Charbonneau reveals the triumphs and challenges they faced amidst a hostile political atmosphere. Shedding light on the untold stori...

The International Geophysical Year (IGY) of 1957 marked humanity's first unified effort to understand our planet, launching the space race, discovering the Van Allen radiation belts, and producing groundbreaking climate research that shapes our world today. Through exclusive interviews with modern climate leaders—including the late marine biologist and climate researcher Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, science diplomat and Senior Fellow at United Nations Institute for Training and Research Paul Arthur Berkman, Frank Niepo...

How do we achieve happiness for ourselves and our children? About the Author Bill Mess has worked with the elderly for over thirty years and finds working with people who have lived long lives very rewarding. He also volunteers through service clubs and individual not for profit organizations. He thinks this planet and the environment is beautiful but in need of some action to protect it.

The ALMA Telescope

ALMA, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, situated high in the Chilean desert, is the largest ground-based telescope on Earth. This is an insiders' account of how this complex mega-project came to fruition from authors with intimate knowledge of its past and present. The separate roots of ALMA in the United States, Europe, and Japan are traced to their merger into an international partnership involving more than 20 countries. The book relates the search for a suitable telescope site, challenges encountered in organization, funding, and construction, and lessons learned along the way. It closes with a review of the most significant results from ALMA, now one of the most productive telescopes in the world. Written for a broad spectrum of readers, including astronomers, engineers, project managers, science historians, government officials, and the general public, the eBook edition is available to download as an Open Access publication on Cambridge Core.

A timely history of the connections between science, segregation, and species in twentieth-century South Africa. Throughout the twentieth century, rural South Africa was dominated by systems of racial segregation and apartheid that brutally oppressed its Black population. At the same time, the countryside was defined by a related settler obsession: the control of animals that farmers, scientists, and state officials considered pests. Elephants rampaged on farmlands, trampling fences, crops, and occasionally humans. Grain-eating birds flocked on plantations, devouring harvests. Bubonic plague crept across the veld in the bodies of burrowing and crop-devouring rodents. In Segregated Species, J...

Types of UFOs Observed in History

My goal in this book is to show the different types of UFOs reported throughout history and today. I’m not trying to prove whether these ships are real or not. I just thought that given the many thousands of sightings of UFOs there should be some commonalities between the sightings. Some of the questions I want to answer include: Are there any trends in these sightings? Is there an evolution in the design of these vehicles over time? Are there some common designs over time? Also, some of the UFOs sighted are likely fakes or secret projects built by the US government. I tried to show that information too. Just due to the number of stars in our galaxy I’m convinced that Aliens exist and have probably visited our planet thousands or even millions of year in the past-in addition to visiting in the present. This collection of historical photos, drawings, and descriptions should provide you with a narrative as to how these sightings have changed over time.
