The churches of our villages, towns and cities are an essential part of our national heritage. In the past 20 years, many redundant churches have been saved from neglect or demolition by the Redundant Churches Fund. These churches are often allocated a suitable alternative use, thus benefitting the local community and preserving buildings which may be of considerable historical and archaeological interest.
Since 1969, the Redundant Churches Fund has saved over 250 churches from ruin. The fund's preservations include a 13th-century wall painting, and the Saxon tower at Bywell. Photographs, drawings and descriptions form a guide to a variety of churches, from the medieval to the Victorian.
