Green Roof - A Case Study

Green roofs are the great green hope of many environmentalists, politicians, and architects interested in more efficient and environmentally aware buildings. From a design standpoint, however, there is less consensus. While some see the roof garden as a visual statement using plants, geometric lines, and sculptural elements, others believe concerns for sustainability should outweigh visual appeal. A green roof that combines aesthetics and mechanics has become the goal of many a landscape architect. In Green Roof Gardens, author Christian Werthmann explains the history, methodology, and design process of green roof garden construction, providing a rich source of inspiration and technical knowledge in the process for anybody interested in this simple solution to many of the environmental challenges we face today.

Succession in Abandoned Fields

Old and New Fields of Old-Field Ecology In ecology, succession occupies a place similar to that of evolution in general biology. Ram6n Margalef, 1968. It was a great honor for me to have been asked by Marinus Werger to write an introductory note to this very special volume. Presumably my friends and former students in Europe felt that a few words from the New World might put the results presented in this exciting book into a somewhat broader perspective. My perspective (or retrospective), however, is neither impersonal nor original; it is an eclectic reflection of recent developments in ecology and in old-field ecology in particular. The ecological generalizations and theories of Ram6n Margalef and Eugene P. Odum, as we perceived them in Prague in the early 1970s, were for some of us so attractive and promising that we even started to believe it would not take too long until we had a truly unifying general theory of ecological succession. All that was needed - we thought - were data clarifying a few controversial issues. This is how our studies of old-field succession began in 1973. We viewed old-fields as a sort of 'Drosophila' for terrestrial ecology.

International Environmental Consulting Practice

A source of information about present and future opportunities in the international environmental consulting market. This text analyzes the trends which shape the present market and provides information on how to capitalise on future markets. The reader is shown how and where to find environmental consulting opportunities (hazardous waste management, water purification, water pollution control, air pollution solutions, and municipal solid waste management) in global markets. It lists contacts at banks, donor agencies, and government agencies which fund international environmental consulting projects, and includes projections on the global environmental consulting market and where the most lucrative opportunities are located.

How plant and animal species conservation became part of urban planning in Berlin, and how the science of ecology contributed to this change. Although nature conservation has traditionally focused on the countryside, issues of biodiversity protection also appear on the political agendas of many cities. One of the emblematic examples of this now worldwide trend has been the German city of Berlin, where, since the 1970s, urban planning has been complemented by a systematic policy of “biotope protection”—at first only in the walled city island of West Berlin, but subsequently across the whole of the reunified capital. In Greening Berlin, Jens Lachmund uses the example of Berlin to examine...

The Population Structure of Vegetation

The Handbook of Vegetation Science is growing. After the first volumes und er my editorship have appeared the interest of the scientific community has been revived and many new volume editors have started their work. The present volume wasjointly designed by Drs. J. White and W. Beeftink. Due to unforseen developments Dr. White signs now as the sole editor. The development of this volume within the series had a special history as Dr. White pointsout in his preface. Adding to this I need only to state that I found it essential to include the topic of this volume into a Hand book of Vegetation Science. lt was included therefore in my first revised Iist of topics to be included in the Handbook ...
