Image and Text Compression
James A. Storer Computer Science Dept. Brandeis University Waltham, MA 02254 Data compression is the process of encoding a body of data to reduce stor age requirements. With Lossless compression, data can be decompressed to be identical to the original, whereas with lossy compression, decompressed data may be an acceptable approximation (according to some fidelity criterion) to the original. For example, with digitized video, it may only be necessary that the decompressed video look as good as the original to the human eye. The two primary functions of data compression are: Storage: The capacity of a storage device can be effectively increased with data compression software or hardware that compresses a body of data on its way to the storage device and decompress it when it is retrieved. Communications: The bandwidth of a digital communication link can be effectively increased by compressing data at the sending end and decom pressing data at the receiving end. Here it can be crucial that compression and decompression can be performed in real time.
Applications of Fibonacci Numbers
This book contains thirty-six papers from among the forty-five papers presented at the Third International Conference on Fibonacci Numbers and Their Applications which was held in Pisa, Italy from July 25 to July 29, 1988 in honor of Leonardo de Pisa. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Developments in Language Theory, DLT 2005, held in Palermo, Italy in July 2005. The 29 revised full papers presented together with 5 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 73 submissions. Approximation and Online Algorithms
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 9th International Workshop on Approximation and Online Algorithms, WAOA 2011, held in Saarbrücken, Germany, in September 2011. The 21 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 48 submissions. The volume also contains an extended abstract of the invited talk of Prof. Klaus Jansen. The Workshop on Approximation and Online Algorithms focuses on the design and analysis of algorithms for online and computationally hard problems. Both kinds of problems have a large number of applications in a wide variety of fields. Topics of interest for WAOA 2011 were: algorithmic game theory, approximation classes, coloring and partitioning, competitive analysis, computational finance, cuts and connectivity, geometric problems, inapproximability results, mechanism design, network design, packing and covering, paradigms for design and analysis of approximation and online algorithms, parameterized complexity, randomization techniques and scheduling problems.
ECAI 2020
