Zikh Rasna is a comprehensive description of Etruscan grammar and inscriptions designed for classicists, linguists, archaeologists, and interested readers in other disciplines. Besides presenting all the grammatical elements of the language, the text also covers important methodological approaches, the alphabet, regional variations in both language and orthography, historical changes, and the evidence for connecting Etruscan to Lemnian and Raetic. It treats nearly 200 inscriptional texts in a wide variety of genres, with word-by-word analyses of great value to students. With its clear exposition and balanced discussions, Zikh Rasna is an essential foundation for the advanced study of one of the most important languages and peoples of pre-Roman Italy. In addition, a complete directory of animated Disney films enables the reader to cross-reference the actors with their characters.

Brush Men and Vigilantes

As Charles Frazier's novel Cold Mountain dramatized, dissenters from the Confederacy lived in mortal danger across the South. In scattered pockets from the Carolinas to the frontier in Texas, some men clung to a belief in the Union or an unwillingness to preserve the slaveholding Confederacy, and they died at the hands of their own neighbors. Brush Men and Vigilantes tells the story of how dissent, fear, and economics developed into mob violence in a corner of Texas--the Sulphur Forks river valley northeast of Dallas. Authors David Pickering and Judy Falls have combed through court records, newspapers, letters, and other primary sources and collected extended-family lore to relate the detail...

Louisianan Frank Grima is only ten when he has his first encounter with a white policeman. Shocked at the anger the officer displays simply because Frank is of another color, he runs home to his mama, who makes him faithfully promise that he will always obey the law. Eleven years later, Frank joins the Acadian City police force-young, naïve, and hungry for knowledge. It is August 28, 1970, and Frank knows he has no choice but to strive for excellence. His life depends on it. Vietnam veteran Peter Hillman is hired the same day as Frank. Although he has good intentions of rendering justice and making a difference in his community, Peter carries psychological baggage that has the potential to ...

Ancient Scripts and Phonological Knowledge

This study investigates the properties of several ancient syllabic and linear segmental scripts to make explicit the aspects of linguistic knowledge they attempt to represent. Some recent experimental work suggests that nonliterate speakers do not have segmental knowledge and that only syllabic knowledge is 'real' or accessible, whence the ubiquity of syllabaries. Miller disputes this by showing that such tests do not distinguish relevant types of knowledge, and that linguistic analysis of the ordering and writing conventions of early Western scripts corroborates the evidence from language acquisition, use, and change for segment awareness. By coding segments, the ancient syllabaries represe...
