Ribe 700-1050

In 2006, Claus Feveile published Det ældste Ribe [The earliest Ribe], launching the publication series Ribe Studier [Ribe Studies]. The goal of that series was to make the core archaeological evidence from excavations in the town of Ribe between 1984 and 2000 accessible to the scholarly world and to give an account of Ribe’s special status in the archaeological landscape of Denmark and northern Europe. Ribe 700-1050: From Emporium to Civitas in Southern Scandinavia is volume 2 in Ribe Studies. The main text here provides a comprehensive presentation and analysis of the archaeology of the town through to the end of the Viking Period. Alongside that, the book has a major topographical section which discusses West Jutland in this period and the connexions between Ribe and the hinterland of the town. In addition, a concluding chapter discusses the origin of towns in southern Scandinavia.

Northern Emporium

This is the second and final volume presenting the results of the Northern Emporium research project and the high-definition excavations carried out within this programme in 2017-18 in Ribe. The 22 chapters survey the remarkable range of finds retrieved from this hub of the North Sea world in the eighth and ninth centuries AD: artefacts made from pottery, stone, shell, glass, metals, amber, leather, wood, textile, bone and antler. They offer detailed insights that highlight discoveries such as the assemblages from glass bead or comb-making workshops, and rare finds such as wooden furnishings and musical instruments. The focus of the book is on assembling Ribe’s early urban network. By analysing finds and their context, we develop a picture of social roles and interactions between residents and visitors in the emporium. And we follow the connections they created with other worlds as we trace the flows of glass vessels, pottery and wine barrels from Western Europe; iron, stone and animal products from North and Central Scandinavia and beads and coins that travelled from the Middle East and the Indian Ocean into northern Europe’s new maritime frontier.

Ribe Excavations, 1970-76

This is the fifth and last volume in a series presenting the results of one of Scandinavia's most important excavations, carried out in the town of Ribe in southern Denmark from 1970-76. There, researchers extracted remains of a permanent settlement and marketplace founded in 704-710. The findings revealed an 8th-century trading site of a character never seen before in the Scandinavian region, and this has put Denmark in a new light in North-European development of this period. Volume 5 compares the results of the excavations in the 1970s with those made in the following decade. A team of scholars from the humanities and natural sciences have contributed articles that examine different perspectives of the subject. Like the entire series, the present volume, containing rich material from the little-known 8th century in Scandinavia, is an important contribution to research in the history of civilization.
