Fluid Dynamics in Physics, Engineering and Environmental Applications

The book contains invited lectures and selected contributions presented at the Enzo Levi and XVII Annual Meeting of the Fluid Dynamic Division of the Mexican Physical Society in 2011. It is aimed to fourth year undergraduate and graduate students, and scientists in the field of physics, engineering and chemistry that have interest in Fluid Dynamics from the experimental and theoretical point of view. The invited lectures are introductory and avoid the use of complicate mathematics. The other selected contributions are also adequate to fourth year undergraduate and graduate students. The Fluid Dynamics applications include multiphase flow, convection, diffusion, heat transfer, rheology, granular material, viscous flow, porous media flow, geophysics and astrophysics. The material contained in the book includes recent advances in experimental and theoretical fluid dynamics and is adequate for both teaching and research.

Towards Jihad?

Since 2017, Mozambique has been confronted with a jihadi insurgency. This book looks at the origins of that insurgency, and the broader and longer history of the relationship between Islam and politics in the country. Did Mozambique's Muslim politics always point towards jihad? Eric Morier-Genoud examines the period immediately after independence, when the state engaged in anticlericalism; he then moves across the decades to the 2000s, when the ruling party and the opposition alike courted Muslims for electoral purposes, before reaching the 2010s, when tensions between 'mosque and state' returned. Along the way, he explores a wide variety of phenomena, including the rise of Wahhabism, religi...

In the past two decades, complexity thinking has emerged as an important theoretical response to the limitations of orthodox ways of understanding educational phenomena. Complexity provides ways of understanding that embrace uncertainty, non-linearity and the inevitable ‘messiness’ that is inherent in educational settings, paying attention to the ways in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This is the first book to focus on complexity thinking in the context of physical education, enabling fresh ways of thinking about research, teaching, curriculum and learning. Written by a team of leading international physical education scholars, the book highlights how the considera...

CloudRobotics - Distributed Robotics using Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing is a paradigm shift in computation that has been gaining traction over the recent years, which is supported by the increasing availability and ubiquity of a reliable wireless connection to the Internet. Cloud Computing enables the access to seemingly unlimited computer resources that are located on an external computer cluster (the Cloud). In contrast, some robots, e.g. drones, have mobility requirements such as maximum size/weight or minimum autonomy, and carrying more onboard computer resources usually means hindering these requirements. This principle can be brought to the field of Robotics hence the name Cloud Robotics. In this case, the goal is to allow robots to perform...

Traditional methods of making archaeological data available are becoming increasingly inadequate. Thanks to improved techniques for examining data from multiple viewpoints, archaeologists are now in a position to record different kinds of data, and to explore that data more fully than ever before. The growing availablility of computer networks and other technologies means that communication should become increasingly available to international archaeologists. Will this result in the democratisation of archaeological knowledge on a global basis? Contributors from Western and Eastern Europe, the Far East, Africa and the Americas seek to answer this and other questions about the way in which modern technology is revolutionising archaeological knowledge.

AI-assisted Solutions for COVID-19 and Biomedical Applications in Smart Cities

This book constitutes the refereed post-conference proceedings of the Third International Conference on AI-assisted Solutions for COVID-19 and Biometrical Applications in Smart Cities, AISCOVID-19 2022, held in November 2022 in Braga, Portugal. The 8 full papers of AISCOVID-19 2022 were carefully selected from 21 submissions and present a comprehensive and up-to-date look at the intersection of COVID-19, big data, machine learning, deep learning, and healthcare. The theme of AISCOVID-19 2022 was Healthcare effective and efficient Solutions for COVID-19 that can be achieved using Artificial Intelligence and Computer-Assisted paradigms.
