The Social Production of Knowledge in a Neoliberal Age

Higher education exposes a key paradox of neoliberalism. The project of neoliberalism was said to be that of rolling back the state to liberate individuals, by replacing government bureaucracy with the free market. Rather than have the market serve individuals however, individuals were to serve the market. The marketisation ‘reforms’ in higher education, which sought to reshape knowledge production, with students investing in human capital and academics producing ‘transferable’ research, to make higher education of use to the economy, has resulted in extensive government bureaucracy and oppressive managerialist bureaucracy which is inefficient and expensive. Neoliberalism has always ...

Being in Shadow and Light

Academia and its citizens, during periods of political violence and social conflict, are often overlooked. When attention is given, the focus tends to be on student activism, access to higher education, or curriculum development. The experiences of academics affected by conflict remain under-researched, despite the crucial role they play as educators and in generating, documenting, preserving and challenging knowledges. This is particularly concerning given that academics have−and continue to be−at risk as targets of sanction, persecution and oppression. Long Division Festival took place in the city of Wakefield between 2011 to 2023. Created off the back of a local fanzine, Rhubarb Bomb, it initially celebrated the overlooked, under-appreciated local music scene, before growing and expanding to become a nationally respected annual event. But the journey wasn't without difficulties. Founder Dean Freeman, who steered the festival throughout it's lifetime shares insights into how a festival like Long Division fights to exist in the modern world, whilst also looking back at the memorable moments the festival brought. Alongside the story, told in short, zine like chapters, the book contains over 500 photographs and contributions from notable friends of the festival including Holly Ross (The Lovely Eggs), James Smith (Yard Act), John Robb (The Membranes), Robin Ince (Comedian, Writer), Sam Duckworth (Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly) and more.
