Vaccination in America
The success of the polio vaccine was a remarkable breakthrough for medical science, effectively eradicating a dreaded childhood disease. It was also the largest medical experiment to use American schoolchildren. Richard J. Altenbaugh examines an uneasy conundrum in the history of vaccination: even as vaccines greatly mitigate the harm that infectious disease causes children, the process of developing these vaccines put children at great risk as research subjects. In the first half of the twentieth century, in the face of widespread resistance to vaccines, public health officials gradually medicalized American culture through mass media, public health campaigns, and the public education system. Schools supplied tens of thousands of young human subjects to researchers, school buildings became the main dispensaries of the polio antigen, and the mass immunization campaign that followed changed American public health policy in profound ways. Tapping links between bioethics, education, public health, and medical research, this book raises fundamental questions about child welfare and the tension between private and public responsibility that still fuel anxieties around vaccination today.

The American People and Their Education
For undergraduate and graduate courses in History of Education or Social Foundations. In an attempt to expand upon traditional course frameworks, this new text examines American education using a two-fold approach chronological and conceptual. The four text units comprise a journey from earliest Native American informal instruction to today's multimedia classrooms. Chapter titles reflect this chronological approach, while content within chapters presents material thematically, addressing the education of social groups as it evolved within each time period. With this text then, instructors may take either tack chronological or conceptual without sacrificing any relevant material. Emphasis throughout is on the social history of education kindergarten through secondary with particular attention paid to race, sex, ethnicity, social class, language, and special needs.

Caring for Kids
This study reconstructs schooling through the perspectives of a hundred dropbacks - dropouts who resumed their schooling - from the Pittsburgh public schools, and focuses on their perceptions of teachers, administrators, courses, peers, families, and neighborhoods. The research approach, which relies on oral interviews, maximizes students' responses from their own frames of reference, not from a closed set of prearranged questionnaires or surveys. The informants represented all of that city's high schools; this study therefore maintains a composite picture of an entire urban system.
