This collection consists of materials related to the United States (U.S.) Army service of Richard L. Shaffer during the Korean War and the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. The collection contains official papers and photographs. The official papers are arranged by career sequence and then chronologically within those sequences. The first folder contains official documents from Shaffer's military career. These documents include G.I. Bill fact sheets, citations, awards, decorations, and orders. The second folder contains official documents pertaining to Shaffer's separation and reserve status including his reserve qualification worksheets, Army Reserve qualification availability questionnaires, and a letter confirming his transfer to the Army Reserves. The final folder of official papers contains documents pertaining to Shaffer's discharge and include his certificate of service, a reproduction of his discharge certificate, and Selective Service classification card. The photographs depict the daily life of Soldiers, Soldiers playing games, Korean support personnel working, terrain, American fortifications, and observation posts.
