After experiencing life in New York, Kentucky and Mississippi, the married couple ventured to the newly formed state of California where they settled in San Francisco. Both Andrew and his wife were entrepreneurs and pioneers. He was a merchant, an investor and gold miner; she took in boarders and eventually managed Sausalito's upscale Alta Mira Villa.
