Recent studies indicate more than 65% of children who grow up attending church will walk away from their faith before graduating from college. A New York Times bestseller 'A sensation ... a rollicking tale well told' - The Times At the heart of Born to Run lies a mysterious tribe of Mexican Indians, the Tarahumara, who live quietly in canyons and are reputed to be the best distance runners in the world; in 1993, one of them, aged 57, came first in a prestigious 100-mile race wearing a toga and sandals. A small group of the world's top ultra-runners (and the awe-inspiring author) make the treacherous journey into the canyons to try to learn the tribe's secrets and then take them on over a course 50 miles long. With incredible energy and smart observation, McDougall tells this story while asking what the secrets are to being an incredible runner. Travelling to labs at Harvard, Nike, and elsewhere, he comes across an incredible cast of characters, including the woman who recently broke the world record for 100 miles and for her encore ran a 2:50 marathon in a bikini, pausing to down a beer at the 20 mile mark.

"Stage technicians or 'techies' don't read books, they seek information on the basis of the need to know." This is a practical guide to stage lighting covering equipment, lighting a performance space, special effects and lighting design. It can be read cover-to-cover, but also used as reference manual which provides easy access to the content through the use of tabulated sections and keywords. The information in each chapter is presented at three levels: - A quick start - basic information providing enough to get started - More info - more detailed knowledge - Extras! - extended technical information and data The three strands run visually throughout the guide enabling students to mix and ma...
Born to Run by Christopher McDougall | Summary & Analysis Preview: Born to Run is a book about the natural virtues of running, based on Christopher McDougall’s own experiences, research, and training. It is centered on the Tarahumara, an indigenous Mexican tribe known for their feats of long-distance running. McDougall, a journalist, is a low-key hobbyist runner himself, but he experiences numerous injuries which threaten to force him to stop. Given the high injury rate among runners, McDougall is fascinated by stories of the Mexican Tarahumara. These native people live in the rugged, hot Copper Canyon, and are known for running more than 100-mile races over broken ground at amazing speeds. More amazingly still, the Tarahumara wear flat sandals rather than running shoes… PLEASE NOTE: This is key takeaways and analysis of the book and NOT the original book. Most astronomers and physicists now believe that the matter content of the Universe is dominated by dark matter: hypothetical particles which interact with normal matter primarily through the force of gravity. Though invisible to current direct detection methods, dark matter can explain a variety of astronomical observations. This book describes how this theory has developed over the past 75 years, and why it is now a central feature of extragalactic astronomy and cosmology. Current attempts to directly detect dark matter locally are discussed, together with the implications for particle physics. The author comments on the sociology of these developments, demonstrating how and why scientists work and interact. Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND), the leading alternative to this theory, is also presented. This fascinating overview will interest cosmologists, astronomers and particle physicists. Mathematics is kept to a minimum, so the book can be understood by non-specialists.
In 2013, I turned forty. As parents of two school-age children, the husband and I were trying to decide if our family was complete. We could never get on the same page about more children. I would be ready, and he would be on the fence. Then he would be ready, and I would be unsure. One thing we did agree on was that we both needed to be 100 percent on board. After all, with a third child, we would officially be outnumbered. Even though we could not decide on more children, I had a strong desire to nurture. So in a six-month time span, I collected four chickens, two kittens, and a puppy named Smooch. Her name was pretty self-explanatory. She had a tongue so big it did not fit into her mouth. Everyone she met got smooched. Smooch was a bullmastiff , a breed that was supposed to be calm, not needing a lot of exercise, and really easy to train. She was anything but that. This book includes anecdotes of Smooch’s life with our family. It is my way of documenting our adventures and memories. Her life was not long, but she will be with us forever in spirit.
