Knowledge Governance in an Industrial Cluster

This dissertation explains why there persists a divergence of academia-industry-government inter-linkage in the Indonesian science system. This divergence constrains the capacity of the science system in localizing knowledge from the supply chain linkage and demonstrates the centralized character of the Indonesian science system. Additionally, the book shows that the Jababeka Industrial Cluster is shaped by the supply chain linkage and, thus, lacks the capacity of a knowledge cluster. Therefore, horizontal collaboration between academia-industry is restricted and limited. Dissertation. (Series: ZEF Development Studies - Vol. 27)

Intellectual Property in Asia

  • Categories: Law

Introduction Intellectual property rights foster innovation. But if, as it surely does, “intellectual property” means not just intellectual property rules—the law of patents, copyrights, trademarks, designs, trade secrets, and unfair competition—but also intellectual property institutions—the courts, police, regulatory agencies, and collecting soc- ties that administer these rules—what are the respective roles of intellectual property rules and institutions in fostering creativity? And, to what extent do forces outside intellectual property rules and institutions—economics, culture, politics, history—also contribute to innovation? Is it possible that these other factors so ov...

Using a historical sociology approach, this book illustrates the formation of the technological state in Indonesia during the New Order period (1966-1998). The book discusses how the New Order regime shifted from the developmental state to the technological state, which was characterized by desire for technological supremacy. The process resulted in the establishment of a host of technological institutions and the undertaking of large-scale high-tech programs. Shedding light on the political dimension of socio-technological transformation, this book looks at the re...

Agricultural R and D in the Developing World

"The world's agricultural economy was transformed remarkably during the 20th century. The agricultural productivity growth that fueled this change was generated primarily by agricultural R&D financed and conducted by a small group of rich countries-especially the United States, but also Japan, Germany, and France. In an increasingly interdependent world, both rich and poor countries have depended on agricultural research conducted in the private and public laboratories of these few countries, even if they have not contributed to financing the activity. But now the rich-country research agendas are shifting. In particular, they are no longer as interested in simple productivity enhancement. D...
