Childhood in African Literature

"African authors have consistently returned to childhood to find their personal as well as their racial roots. Far from being merely nostalgic yearnings for a lost paradise, many of the treatments of childhood as shown in articles in this issue have exposed a grim reality of cruelty, harshness, parental (particularly paternal) egocentrism and extraordinary bruisings of the vulnerable child psyche. Camara Laye may have portrayed a paradise state but Yvonne Vera has treated one of the cruelest features of childhood anywhere. African authors generally have been sternly responsible in their portrayal of childhood." -- Publisher's description

Childhood disability issues and implications for an effective rehabilitation process

Disability, and specifically childhood disability, is an issue that is evolving and which recently met worldwide interest in both developed and developing countries. After the enactment of the Convention on Rights for Persons with Disability (CRPD) in 2006, many moves have been made toward the establishment of disabled children’s rights, both on international and national panoramas, but there is still a long way to go, primarily for complete and effective inclusion in their local community. It is rather a permanent interaction between pathologies, limitations and disabilities in a dynamic system affected by the internal and external environment of ...

Occupational therapy for children in the world

Occupational therapy, or OT, is a profession that promotes health and well-being through occupation. According to Anne G. Fisher, occupation is: • The act of mastering or taking possession of something, of occupying time, spaces and roles • An action or a series of actions in which the subject engages • A targeted and meaningful action. Occupational therapy around the world The primary goal of OT is to enable people to participate in everyday activities. In order to reach this goal, occupational therapists help disabled patients learn how to do activities that enhance their engagement and participation abilities by modifying the environment (see WFOT definition). The term ‘occupational’ refers not only to the use of activities and occupations, but also to the idea that disabled people must become the real ‘protagonists’ of the therapy.
