From the War of Independence through the dark days of the Cold War, the Marines have fought in all the nation's wars. Their readiness and prompt action at Harper's Ferry stopped John Brown's insurrection in its tracks. In 1917, as the "First to Fight" slogan demonstrated its electric effect, the 5th Marines sailed for France and joined up with the first convoy at sea, anxious to get on with the war. With courage, discipline, and typical small-unit initiative, the Marines triumphed at Belleau Wood, a victory that was to advantageously affect the quality and thinking of the Marine Corps ever after. Yet it is no accident that so much of the Marine Corps' fighting and expeditionary service has t...

Diederich, a correspondent for Time magazine, draws from his weekly newspaper the Haiti Sun to provide an account of the impact of Fidel Castro's victory over dictator Batista in Cuba in 1959 on the rest of the Caribbean. He describes how Haiti's dictator Francois Duvalier was caught in the middle, while Dominican Republic dictator Generalissimo Rafael Trujillo Molina saw him as a dangerous communist. He recounts events from Castro's first press conference and his interview with Duvalier to plane hijackings to Cuba and other upheavals, and even visits to the islands by Hollywood stars. This is the third book in a series recounting events reported in the Haiti Sun.

The Marine Officer's Guide

The Marine Officer's Guide, 7th Edition describes in detail the Marine Corps as a mili-tary institution of the United States and, in so doing, delineates the characteris-tics of the men and women who constitute the Corps. The Guide supplements, but does not supplant, official regulations and instructions. It can help an officer to acquire quickly a stockpile of information, but it does not relieve the officer of his or her obligation to know the published regulations that govern our Corps. I have endeavored to provide sound advice and up-to-date information on pro-fessional matters of note to the Marine officer. I have described customs and usages that are current and not at variance with "t...

Red and Black in Haiti

In 1934 the republic of Haiti celebrated its 130th anniversary as an independent nation. In that year, too, another sort of Haitian independence occurred, as the United States ended nearly two decades of occupation. In the first comprehensive political history of postoccupation Haiti, Matthew Smith argues that the period from 1934 until the rise of dictator Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier to the presidency in 1957 constituted modern Haiti's greatest moment of political promise. Smith emphasizes the key role that radical groups, particularly Marxists and black nationalists, played in shaping contemporary Haitian history. These movements transformed Haiti's political culture, widened political discourse, and presented several ideological alternatives for the nation's future. They were doomed, however, by a combination of intense internal rivalries, pressures from both state authorities and the traditional elite class, and the harsh climate of U.S. anticommunism. Ultimately, the political activism of the era failed to set Haiti firmly on the path to a strong independent future.
