Expressing Surprise at the Crossroads
Expressing Surprise at the Crossroads has as its aim to evaluate the impact of mirativity in Romance languages or –expressed differently– to determine how these languages apprehend surprise and related notions as linguistic devices. The different contributions included in the book point to revealing conclusions concerning the status of surprise in Romance as well as the place that mirativity occupies (if any) in the grammar of these languages. In this vein, the volume tries to answer questions such as to what extent do interactional contexts influence the development of mirative structures or how is the solidarity synchrony / diachrony reflected in mirative constructions.
Genre Analysis and Corpus Design
This work in the field of digital literary stylistics and computational literary studies is concerned with theoretical concerns of literary genre, with the design of a corpus of nineteenth-century Spanish-American novels, and with its empirical analysis in terms of subgenres of the novel. The digital text corpus consists of 256 Argentine, Cuban, and Mexican novels from the period between 1830 and 1910. It has been created with the goal to analyze thematic subgenres and literary currents that were represented in numerous novels in the nineteenth century by means of computational text categorization methods. To categorize the texts, statistical classification and a family resemblance analysis relying on network analysis are used with the aim to examine how the subgenres, which are understood as communicative, conventional phenomena, can be captured on the stylistic, textual level of the novels that participate in them.
Lifespan Acquisition and Language Change
This volume connects the latest research on language acquisition across the lifespan with the explanation of language change in specific sociohistorical settings. This conversation benefits from recent advances in two areas: on the one hand, the study of how learners of various ages and in various sociolinguistic contexts acquire language variation; on the other, historical sociolinguistics as the field that focuses on the study of historical patterns of language variation and change. Diese Festschrift ehrt den Romanisten und Slawisten Gerhard Penzkofer anlässlich seines 65. Geburtstags. Kolleginnen und Kollegen sowie Schülerinnen und Schüler, die Gerhard Penzkofer auf seinem bisherigen Weg unter anderem in München, Bamberg und Würzburg sowohl fachlich als auch persönlich nahestanden, publizieren hier Beiträge, die von seinen Forschungen inspiriert sind. Im Zentrum dieser Untersuchungen, die den italienischen, französischen und spanischen Sprachraum umschließen, steht das Verhältnis von Kommunikation und Repräsentation.
