This book addresses issues of monitoring populations of tigers, ungulate prey species and habitat occupancy, with relevance to similar assessments of large mammal species and general biodiversity. It covers issues of rigorous sampling, modeling, estimation and adaptive management of animal populations using cutting-edge tools, such as camera-traps, genetic identification and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), applied under the modern statistical approach of Bayesian and likelihood-based inference. Of special focus here are animal survey data derived for use under spatial capture-recapture, occupancy, distance sampling, mixture-modeling and connectivity analysees. Because tigers are an ico...

Biodiversity Loss in a Changing Planet

Biodiversity Loss in a Changing Planet

Every ecosystem is a complex organization of carefully mixed life forms; a dynamic and particularly sensible system. Consequently, their progressive decline may accelerate climate change and vice versa, influencing flora and fauna composition and distribution, resulting in the loss of biodiversity. Climate changes effects are the principal topics of this volume. Written by internationally renowned contributors, Biodiversity loss in a changing planet offers attractive study cases focused on biodiversity evaluations and provisions in several different ecosystems, analysing the current life condition of many life forms, and covering very different biogeographic zones of the planet.

Hierarchical Modeling and Inference in Ecology

A guide to data collection, modeling and inference strategies for biological survey data using Bayesian and classical statistical methods. This book describes a general and flexible framework for modeling and inference in ecological systems based on hierarchical models, with a strict focus on the use of probability models and parametric inference. Hierarchical models represent a paradigm shift in the application of statistics to ecological inference problems because they combine explicit models of ecological system structure or dynamics with models of how ecological systems are observed. The principles of hierarchical modeling are developed and applied to problems in population, metapopulatio...

The Characteristics of Pediatric Soft Tissue Sarcomas: Recent Advances in Management and Treatment

Sarcomas are forms of cancer that comprise tumors of the connective and structural tissue of the body and mainly affect children and young adults. Pediatric soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a heterogeneous group of malignant tumors constituting about 7% of all cancer cases. Rhabdomyosarcomas (RMS) constitute about half of all soft tissue sarcomas in children, the rest being constituted by non- rhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue sarcomas (NRSTS). The estimated 5-year survival rate is around 65.6% in children and young adults, Rhabdomyosarcoma being as low as 59.2% in some cases.

Biology Related to Environmental Studies

Biology Related to Environmental Studies explores the intersection of biology and ecology, focusing on how species interact with their environment and the impact of human activities on ecosystems. The book addresses critical environmental challenges such as air and water pollution, deforestation, biodiversity loss, soil degradation, resource depletion, climate change, and genetically modified organisms. These pressing issues, intensified by industrialization and urbanization, threaten global ecosystems and require urgent solutions. This book provides a clear understanding of fundamental ecological principles, environmental monitoring processes, and innovative methods for addressing current environmental problems. It emphasizes the importance of conservation, restoration, and the role of environmental biologists in preserving wildlife and assessing human impacts on nature. With a progressive approach, it integrates concepts of evolution, ecology, and sustainability, equipping students with the knowledge and tools to contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development.
