This book collects research and review articles covering some recent trends in nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics, specifically the interaction of atoms or molecules within the quantum electromagnetic radiation field and the related physical effects. Specific topics covered are: two- and three-body dispersion interactions between atoms and molecules, both in the nonretarded van der Waals and the retarded Casimir–Polder regime; vacuum field fluctuations of the electromagnetic field and their effect in atomic systems; dispersion interactions between uniformly accelerating atoms and relation with the Fulling–Davies–Unruh effect; dynamics of atomic systems under strong electromagnetic fields; symmetries in quantum electrodynamics; and open quantum systems.
This volume contains papers based on talks delivered at the Fourth Workshop on Quantum Field Theory Under the Influence of External Conditions. This series of workshops, held at the Institute for Theoretical Physics of the University of Leipzig, was launched in 1989. The present meeting took place 50 years after Hendrik B Casimir discovered the effect named after him. This effect was found by Casimir in investigating the retarded long range van der Waals forces in colloids and re-expressing them as a change in the vacuum energy of the electromagnetic field. This book presents the Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in Quantum Physics, held in Palermo, Italy, from 18 to 23 May 2015. Non-Hermitian operators, and non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in particular, have recently received considerable attention from both the mathematics and physics communities. There has been a growing interest in non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in quantum physics since the discovery that PT-symmetric Hamiltonians can have a real spectrum and thus a physical relevance. The main subjects considered in this book include: PT-symmetry in quantum physics, PT-optics, Spectral singularities and spectral techniques, Indefinite-metric theories, Open quantum systems, Krein space methods, and Biorthogonal systems and applications.
