Harley Jenkins was born in the Darfield hospital in the spring of 1930 and has remained in the area ever since. After leaving school in 1944 he worked on his father's farm at Kimberley and, on a casual basis, for other farmers in the district. His foray into farming on his own account came in 1954 with the purchase of three pedigree Angus heifers. A year later he was to purchase "Floridale" only a kilometre or so from where he was raised as a child and from those extremely modest beginnings so began a lifetime of dedication to the fickle business of running a commercial Angus cattle stud. Harley's expertise with livestock has seen him make a considerable mark within the stud Angus world. Aside from his ability as an astute judge of cattle he has been blessed with a quick wit and a lively sense of humour. This story notonly tells of his farming achievements but also dwells on the lighter moments of life and some of the people who accompanied him on his journey.

William Karnowski writes to his wife, his children, and to the reader about the path he took from a small boy on a cattle ranch in Northeast Kansas to life in the fast lane in the urban jungles. His personal collection of poetic insights describes the faces and places of America. His prose and poetry paint written pictures of the joy of his childhood, the dangers of his youth, and his comfort in the great outdoors. Karnowski has traveled from Maine to California, from Canada to Mexico, absorbing and reflecting on his passage through the good and bad times from the late 60s to present. The date each poem was written has been recorded. The trickle of poems written in the early years has grown to a flood, which resulted in Pushing the Chain. Sometimes humorous, sometimes reflective, sometimes sad, but always honest; Pushing the Chain will strike chords of recognition in the heart and mind of the traveler, look at his or her own life through the prose and poetry of William Karnowski.

Contributors from across the university focus on what the land-grant mission means to them in their daily endeavors, whether that be crafting the undergraduate academic experience, stimulating research, or engaging with the community through extension activities. The twenty contributions are divided into four parts, exploring in turn the core mission of the modern land-grant university, the university environment, the university's public value, and its accountability. The volume ends with an epilogue by the editor, which summarizes the values underlying the activities of land-grant institutions. In a time of uncertainty in higher education, this volume provides a helpful overview of the many different types of value public universities bring to American society.
