Gauge Theory of Weak Decays

"The ultimate question of elementary particle physics is: What is the fundamental Lagrangian of nature surrounding us? The Lagrangian of the SM is very successful in describing nature at the currently available energy range. The discovery of the Higgs boson completed the particle spectrum of the SM and it is another proof of how well the SM works. Nevertheless the SM cannot be the end of the story and it is for sure not the fundamental Lagrangian of nature. The Lagrangian of the SM looses its validity at the latest at the Planck scale where gravitational effects become noticeable. Most physicists think of the SM as an effective theory that has to be replaced by a more fundamental theory above the TeV scale. What the word effective really means will hopefully be clear at later stages of our book. For the time being we will list some problems and open questions of the SM"--

In Praise of Limes is a book of original poems by Shirley Geok-lin Lim. Born in Malacca, Malaysia, Shirley Geok-lin Lim was raised by her Chinese father and attended missionary schools. Although her first languages were Malay and the Hokkin dialect of Chinese, she was able to read English by the time she was six. At 10, her first poem was published in the Malacca Times; by age 11, she knew she wanted to be a poet. She earned her BA from the University of Malaya and her PhD from Brandeis University. Lim considers herself primarily a poet, although she has also written books of short stories, criticism, a novel, and a memoir. Her debut collection, Crossing the Peninsula and Other Poems (1980),...

Liver Transplantation and the Alcoholic Patient

Alcohol-induced liver disease, the most common cause of end-stage liver failure in the developed world, is treated increasingly by liver transplantation. This poses especially difficult dilemmas for health care workers in liver transplant programmes. This text, jointly edited by a hepatologist, a surgeon and a psychiatrist, provides a scientific and scholarly review of the medical, surgical and psychosocial aspects of evaluation, surgery and post-liver-transplant care in alcoholics. Drawing on the extensive experience gained in recent years at the University of Michigan Medical Center, practical advice is given, enlivened by the use of case vignettes. The book concludes with a stimulating discussion of the ethical issues surrounding the controversial topic of liver transplantation in alcoholics. Essential reading for all involved in organ transplantation, it will provide valuable insights to all physicians, surgeons, psychiatrists and related health care professionals involved in the care of alcoholic patients.
