Whatever Happened to Community Mental Health? is the story of the beginning of the community mental health movement in the 1960s as displayed through experiences in the inner city of Baltimore in one of the first programs. It portrays bold, groundbreaking initiatives taken by a young staff to deliver services to the impoverished residents while fulfilling their preventive mission. The story is given life in the form of a memoir by one of its earliest staff members and conveys the lessons learned, the viable service model developed as well as the shortcomings of the professional community. The lessons learned are outlined along with the presentation of issues of philosophy and management. Although the movement as originally intended foundered as the result of professional conservatism and changes in national commitments, this book brings the experiences forward in time and demonstrates the applicability of service and consultation activities today as they apply both to treatment and prevention. The implications of this story also serve as the basis for a call for a fundamental reevaluation of what mental health is and to what it should be committed in the future.

Gaia speaks: "You used to adore me. You took my bounty gratefully and before my loving sight developed your skills as will a child in the sight of mother. You worshipped me and my fruitfulness. I tested you with adversity which made you strong. But in time you selfishly saw Earth's bounty as your due. You now have a choice between stewardsip or devastation." The Gaia's Majesty Triloigy is a unique female-centric trilogy blending mythology and current world environmental issues. It tells the story of the time before us as we descend into ever greater social and environmental crises.

Stepfamilies

This book was originally published in 1996 and was intended for mental health professionals. Emily and John Visher, who were the founding "parents" of the Stepfamily Association of America, referred to it as the definitive work on stepfamily interventions. It was apparent that it had perfect utility for stepcouples especially when they were working with a professional counselor. Recently the book went out of print. The authors consider it far too important a work to let it disappear and obtained the rights back. In this digital age it is being given new life and has been redesigned as a dual use book for partnerships between stepcouples and helping professionals. The model utilized is called...

This book has its roots in the authors' 16 years of direct clinical experience with almost 500 stepfamilies, as well as their own personal experience as a stepfamily. In response to the dearth of resources for stepfamilies in the therapeutic community, the Burts have created an intervention that addresses the specific concerns and challenges of the stepfamily: the Step By Step Model of Brief Therapy. This important book outlines the model and its applications. The strengths of the Step By Step Model are in its simplicity and flexibility, and in the collaborative process between client and therapist. The authors' discussion highlights the necessity of providing clients with realistic perspectives, strategies, and tools that help them to be more in control of the stepfamily process. Whether related to interactions, adjustments, or developmental stages, the Step By Step Model is designed to accommodate the many forces at work both inside and outside the therapy room. This perspective will help any clinician, regardless of specific orientation, to bring into focus therapeutic strategies that help these families move forward.

The Remarriage Blueprint

Relationship expert Maggie Scarf shares in-depth stories of seven remarried couples--revealing the unique challenges they face as they strive to achieve lasting intimacy and familial harmony. It's estimated that 40 percent of new marriages in the US are remarriages, but the survival rate of second marriages is alarmingly low. Many remarrying couples set out with a sense of optimism, a belief that this marriage will usher in a life of happiness and family unity--but family dynamics can often strain new partnerships to the breaking point. The challenges of remarriage are pervasive, but little guidance has existed until now. Based on more than a decade of candid, revelatory interviews, The Remarriage Blueprint provides a crucial explanation of the obstacles to remarriage and the secrets to overcoming them.--From publisher description.
