Robert Delaunay (1885-1941) was one of the first modern artists to take the final step into abstraction, directed by the pure power of colour and by the ideas coming from theories of perception. The colour lyricism of his works increased from 1912 to 1914 to create colourist fireworks. Delaunay's oeuvre also deals with the fascination, typical of the time, for the accelerated perception of the city and the technical advances that accompanied this. As a leading light of the avant-garde in Paris, Delaunay created a new artistic language to express these ideas. Beginning with the large-format major work Hommage a Bleriot (1914), this catalogue investigates this decisive phase in the artist's work, illustrates his collaboration with Sonia Delaunay-Terk and describes the restoration of his major work. The illustrated book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Robert Delaunay. Hommage a Bleriot, 2008, Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland. English and German text.

The equally burlesque and sepulchral installation Mengele-Dance of Death (1986), created out of the remnants of a devastating fire, assumes a key position in the late oeuvre of Swiss artist Jean Tinguely. The group of kinetic sculptures combines the memento mori motif, a reminder of the equality of all mankind in the face of death, and an admonition against all forms of totalitarianism with the irony and penchant for the grotesque that are peculiar to Tinguely's work. The publication will be released on occasion of the opening of the specially created exhibition space in the Tinguely Museum Basel. Contributions by Roland Wetzel, Sophie Oosterwijk and Sven Keller, along with an interview with Jean Tinguely shed light on the work's genesis, the tradition of the dance of death motif, and the myth of the name-giving NS perpetrator Mengele.

Roger Ballen - Call of the Void is the eighth in a series of exhibitions at Museum Tinguely under the title Danse macabre with works responding to Jean Tinguely's late work Mengele - Dance of Death, shown in direct proximity to it. In his work, Ballen examines the human psyche and asks both himself and the viewer questions about being and becoming. Ballen writes: My show that I have chosen to title Call of the Void is an attempt to come to terms with what I believe to be the most central questions in human existence namely, where did we come from? What are we here for? And where do we go once we die? Whilst I do not claim to provide answers or even questions to these most profound and difficult issues, it is my hope that my exhibition will challenge the viewer's perceptions and consequently set up a process of self-examination leading to a more inquisitive state of self-consciousness.Å. The exhibition consists of two parts that define and enrich one another. The walls are hung with ph

Als erste Ausstellung im neuen Jahr zeigt das Museum Tinguely Skulpturen, Installationen und Videos der Berliner Künstlerin Sofia Hultén (geb. 1972 in Stockholm).

Art Scents

"An overview of the aesthetic and ethical issues raised by the contemporary olfactory arts, which range from gallery and museum sculptures and installations, through the enhancement of theatre, film and music with scents, to the ambient scenting of stores and avant-garde chefs' use of scents in cuisine. Special attention is given to the aesthetics of perfume and incense and the question of their art status, as well as to the role of scent in the appreciation of nature and gardens. Ethical issues are discussed regarding ambient scenting, perfume wearing, and the use of smells in fast-food marketing. Because of the traditional neglect and denigration of the sense of smell and its aesthetic pot...
