Standing His Ground

Contrary to what the mainstream media has claimed, Florida under Ron DeSantis has become the home for freedom and individual liberty. At the onset of the pandemic, political leaders throughout the country were forced to quickly make significant decisions about how they would govern under extraordinary circumstances. A number of these decisions simply required instinct—they just had to come from the gut. There was little, if any, precedent to examine, and hardly any time for the usual gambits to test potential solutions. One person became a household name and a national hero for having made what proved to be the best decisions over and over: Ron DeSantis, the 46th governor of Florida. Howev...

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Ron DeSantis made Florida the freest state in the country. While other politicians advocated lockdowns and masking policies, DeSantis did everything he could to keep businesses open and protect civil liberties. DeSantis began fighting for civil liberties years earlier, though. He launched his political career in the U.S. Congress in 2012. Drawing on his Harvard law school education and military experience, he argued for Constitutional principles. Then, with the endorsement of President Donald Trump, he successfully ran for Governor of Florida. Cason Longhurst recounts Ron DeSantis's political career to date, revealing the principles that guide this conservative rising star.

“Delivering juicy details with unrelenting speed and force” (Jonathan Allen), Swamp Monsters is the wild inside story of how Donald Trump made a star of Ron DeSantis and then set out to destroy him—a struggle for supremacy that has turned Florida into the crucible of the new GOP and of America's future—by “one of the keenest and best-sourced observers of Florida’s political maelstrom” (Rick Wilson). Ron DeSantis was struggling through Florida’s political wilderness when, in late 2017, Donald Trump extended his hand. Ambitious but charmless, DeSantis was a relatively obscure figure even within his own state’s Republican party, and an unlikely pick for the GOP’s gubernatori...

Introduction to David Koresh

David Koresh was a cult leader who gained international notoriety in the early 1990s. Born Vernon Wayne Howell in 1959, he changed his name to David Koresh in the early 1980s. He joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church in California in the 1970s, but was expelled due to his radical beliefs. Koresh then moved to Texas and began preaching his own version of Christianity. He founded the Branch Davidian sect, which had about 100 members living in a compound near Waco, Texas. Koresh believed that he was a messiah and had a direct line of communication with God. He interpreted the Bible in a unique way and believed that the end of the world was coming. In 1993, the compound was raided by the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) after allegations of child abuse and weapons violations. The siege lasted 51 days and ended in tragedy when the FBI attempted to storm the compound, resulting in a fire that killed 76 members of the sect, including Koresh. The incident has been the subject of much controversy and investigation, with many questioning the tactics of law enforcement and the role of Koresh in the events that unfolded.
