Directed by God

As part of its effort to forge a new secular Jewish nation, the nascent Israeli state tried to limit Jewish religiosity. However, with the steady growth of the ultraorthodox community and the expansion of the settler community, Israeli society is becoming increasingly religious. Although the arrival of religious discourse in Israeli politics has long been noticed, its cultural development has rarely been addressed. Directed by God explores how the country’s popular media, principally film and television, reflect this transformation. In doing so, it examines the changing nature of Zionism and the place of Judaism within it. Once the purview of secular culture, Israel’s media initially pro...

Notes from the Shed

Hanna Kay describes her journal, begun in summer 2003, as a dialogue between one and oneself. She says: 'Keeping a journal is like meeting this person inside me head-on'. And that person is an artist whose journal helps the reader understand something of the way an artist thinks. Both her journal and the paintings produced in her studio measure the passing of the seasons and the artist's emotional empathy with the Australian landscape the and living things about her as she responds to the seasonal changes wrought by Nature. She says: 'The locals [in rural NSW] refer to my Studio as "the shed". For me the 200 square metres framed by iron-bark posts and corrugated iron, is a sanctuary in which I dare to experiment, question, or be idle. The solid structure and the five acres that surround it protect me from the world's follies.' Her observations of the environment are recorded poetically, her own musing interspersed with references to world literature. The book is dedicated: 'To Nature, while she's still around'.

The Cambridge Companion to the Talmud and Rabbinic Literature

This volume introduces students of rabbinic literature to the range of historical and interpretative questions surrounding the rabbinic texts of late antiquity. The editors, themselves well-known interpreters of Rabbinic literature, have gathered an international collection of scholars to support students' initial steps in confronting the enormous and complex rabbinic corpus. Unlike other introductions to Rabbinic writings, the present volume includes approaches shaped by anthropology, gender studies, oral-traditional studies, classics, and folklore studies.

Hebrew in America

Among the millions of Jews who immigrated to America in the early twentieth century, there were the few for whom Hebrew culture was an important ideal. Reaching a critical mass around World War I, these American Hebraists attempted to establish a vital Hebrew culture in America. They founded journals and wrote Hebrew poetry, fiction, and essays, largely about the American Jewish experience, and they succeeded in putting a Hebraist stamp upon most of the Jewish education that took place between the two world wars. Hebrew in America is the first book to fully explore the Jewish attachment to Hebrew in twentieth-century North America. Fifteen leading scholars in Judaic studies write about the l...
