Borges, Language and Reality
This book brings together the work of several scholars to shed light on the Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges' complex relationship with language and reality. A critical assumption driving the work is that there is, as Jaime Alazraki has put it, 'a genuine effort to overcome the narrowness that Western tradition has imposed as a master and measure of reality' in Borges' writing. That narrowness is in large measure a consequence of the chronic influence of positivist approaches to reality that rely on empirical evidence for any authentication of what is 'real'. This study shows that, in opposition to such restrictions, Borges saw in fiction, in literature, the most viable means of discussing reality in a pragmatic manner. Moreover, by scrutinising several of the author's works, it establishes signposts for considering the truly complicated relationship that Borges had with reality, one that intimately associates the 'real' with human perception, insight and language.

Este undécimo volumen de la Colección de "Literatura y Mujer" explora las variantes de autoría femenina de relatos tradicionales protagonizados por mujeres que, desde hace siglos, forman parte de nuestro ideario colectivo. Estas narraciones de largo recorrido, multiplicadas en épocas y espacios distintos, nos vienen acompañando en sus diversas variantes como instrumentos poderosos de configuración de género. Situadas entre la cultura alta y la cultura popular, entre la escritura y la oralidad, muestran todo un abanico de relaciones humanas y de estrategias de pasividad o resistencia frente al mundo, que las convierten en privilegiada atalaya para leer la realidad. Una "figura discursiva de exclusión" se forma con descripciones de aquello que no conocemos y que se ha vuelto preocupación para nosotros. Cuando construimos figuras desviamos las características de un sujeto u objeto (igualmente figurados) a otro que aún no dominamos con el pensamiento. Las figuras deben entenderse como conjuntos de construcciones sociales y discursivas que condensan prácticas sociales, prejuicios, imaginaciones e ignorancias y que son utilizadas para hiperbolizar las diferencias que existen entre determinados grupos sociales. ENFERMEDAD Y FAMILIA VOL. II
Vamos a presentar la continuación del volumen 1 sobre Enfermedad y familia realizando un resumen breve de cada colaboración. En el apartado de FACTORES PROTECTORES Y DE RIESGO presentamos dos colaboraciones. En La familia con personas en edad provecta se describe esta fase que es la última etapa del desarrollo e inicia alrededor de los 60 años. Entre otras características se encuentran el deterioro físico, cognitivo, cambios psicológicos y sociales (jubilación, pérdidas). En este contexto el papel de la familia es determinante. Es importante identificar los factores de riesgo que dificultan la calidad de vida p. e. los físicos como fragilidad física, enfermedades crónicas; los psicológicos como los trastornos mentales, miedo a las caídas y factores de personalidad; los contextuales como ambiente físico y estereotipos.
